About
The museum is open all year round on the days and times indicated. The visits are guided only and it is advisable to book. The visits are carried out only in Italian / English. The main collection consists of glazed tiles from Sicily and Campania used for pavements and wall tiling, manufactured between the fifteenth and twentieth centuries for the pleasure and enjoyment of privileged society, which included the aristocracy, the wealthy middle class and the religious communities. With almost 5000 pieces on display, it is one of the largest private collections open to the public in all of Europe and it is arranged by period and geographical origin. Every year, the collection grows with the addition of new pieces. Inside the “museum home”, there are also smaller collections of antique toys, tin boxes, vintage items and writing implements.

We were fortunate enough to stay in the B & B upstairs. The Museum is on the floor below, a treasured collection of beautiful tiles, lovingly curated by the owner occupier. It was a privilege to be shown round by someone with a personal connection to the residence. Opening hours may vary, but it's well worth finding out and going along.

Stanze al Genio is hosted in a private house and although you have to call for an appointment, it is well worth the effort. The private tour, in italian, was a highlight fo out trip to Palermo. Piro, our guide and resident expert is passionate about the ancient neapolitan and sicilian tile collection. The rooms are covered from floor to ceiling with ancient tile, each with own unique history. Piro was very knowledgeable about world history and the 'back story on the tiles. Having a private tour was well worth the effort. You MUST CALL ahead FOR AN Appointment.

This attraction is not listed in any of the touristic maps of Palermo and yet it was our favorite one. We found it here on TripAdvisor and were very pleased with the visit. The collection of tiles is one of the largest in Europe, and it is indeed impressive (even if you're not specially interested in tiles...). Take the guided tour, as the explanations are indispensable, and the guides extremely qualified, enthusiastic and nice. The private home that hosts the collection is also delightful, and the whole visit is a trip to another era. Worth every second of our time!

First: the location. On Via Garibaldi, you will not see a marker for number 11, but instead you will see a very dilapidated, unassuming door, and to the right, an intercom, with a button for the Stanze al Genio. After making your reservation ahead of time (either by phone or email), you just show up at the proper time, ring the buzzer, and after checking your name, they will buzz you in.

Second, the timing: as I recall, the English tour is given at 3pm and the Italian at 4pm. The tour is given in the home of the owner of the collection, led by the person who is the buyer for the collection, who is knowledgeable not just of the tiles, but also the furniture and other items displayed in the rooms (for example, one room has a series of shelves with antique toys).

The room where you gather after entering the building is also a bit of a gift shop, with refrigerator magnets and paper reproductions of tiles for sale. But of course the main reason for being there are the tiles covering the walls of most of the rooms in the main floor of the building. If you are at all interested in the decorative arts or at least in Majolica ceramics, you will be thrilled seeing the variety and excellence of this collection.

So I thought the other reviews might have been exaggerating or even written by the owners friends or relatives but believe me they are not! For a few euros you will get a great insight into the regions arts and crafts told through the story of tiles. There was only two of us and an intetpreter was provided - first class , warm and friendly service . It deserves all the top reviews and you will not be disappointed if you visit .

Word of mouth and guidebook descriptions piqued our interest enough to make the call and book an appointment to see this unique collection beautifully arrayed in a private home. This tour ended up being one of the highlights of our stay in Palermo. This collection of hand-painted tiles from Sicily and Palermo (all completed in the centuries before the mass production techniques of the industrial revolution) has a personality and charm and magnetic quality that draws you into a close inspection of one tile after another of the more than 3500 on display. You only need to spend a moment in the foyer of the apartment to know you've landed in a magical place. Set aside the time in your schedule when you go to Palermo next to call for an appointment, and spend an hour getting lost in the beauty and history of this special collection.

I made reservations for this collection based on the strength of other TA reviews. I'm really glad I did as I really enjoyed my time there and the tour with Claudio (who speaks great English) was really interesting. Making a reservation for the date and time was really easy by email with Claudio responded to my emails really quickly. They have plans to develop the building further so I'm planning to revisit again when those have been completed.
