Palazzo Normanni has a number of interesting highlights, the main being the Palatine Chapel, resplendent in its mosaic decorations. Inside the Royal Apartments, Sala del Ruggero and Torre Pisana are among the most impressive places, well worth an extended look. There are also the gardens and a couple of additional exhibitions.

Customer orientation …..
Sep 2021 • Couples
I did not know, there would be a security check like in airports.
So I carried along my Laguiole bottle opener with a small pocket knife. I wasn’t allowed to go inside with this really dangerous weapon. Ok, I understand. So I asked the lady at the counter, the man at the cashier and the security guy at the door to keep it for me . No chance. „Just leave it anywhere on the front porch“ . Sure, a Laguiole knife will wait for me. So I wasted 15,50€, which was ridiculous anyway, because the royal apartments of the palace where closed anyway and you could just visit the chapel. Which is really beautiful by the way. But….. So again another example of customer orientated kindness….

Number 1 Palermo attraction
Sep 2021 • Friends
A must see on any visit to Palermo, especially for the awe inspiring Palatine chapel and its golden mosaics covering the soaring walls. You'll spend most of your visit in the chapel but some of the other rooms where the ancient Spanish and Norman kings resided are also worth a peek as is the small botanical garden. We visited during COVID so masks were required as was proof of vaccination (aka green pass) and we had wo all through a sanitizing mist following the metal detectors to enter.

Timed tickets in advance are needed

Speechless beauty

Beautiful museum/building with lot of history. The Palatine Chapel is one of the most beautiful rooms I’ve ever seen in my life, so much gold and so many details.

Don't forget your ID
Oct 2020
The architecture of the palace looks quite intriguing from the outside. We wanted to buy tickets on spot which where 18 Euros which sounds rather expensive to me. However they requested lots of personal data and our ID cards which was mentioned nowhere. Since I always leave my passport in the hotel room, I could not get a ticket and saved some money. I visited the Palace of Count Federico instead which was cheaper, more personal and a lot less hassle than here.

Awful staff at this wonderful monument
Oct 2020
I have given a score of 1 because the customer service and staff at this facility are just appalling even by Italian standards. The bad guy at the ticket office could not have been more unfriendly. Why on earth would you let this person be the first face that a tourist sees for this amazing facility? If anyone from the city reads these reviews, then give these awful people some training. It's a disgrace to your beautiful city

A must visit in Palermo
Sep 2020
A must see in Palermo.

I envy the Sicilian regional bureacrats who work in the building. I recognised the less famous parts of the building (the 3 storeys of colonaded landings around the central courtyard) from La Mafia Uccide Solo L'Estate, and half expected to see Lorenzo Giammaresi leaning over a balcony for a cigarette or a chat with Marina. The main staircase with its clean, white lines, reminded me of an MC Escher drawing.

But like most visitors I came to the palace to see the Arabo-Norman Palatine Chapel with the gilded Byzantine mosaics of Christ and saints, as well as more Islamic style geometric patterns. Stunning, and coherent. A wonderful gem of a space, but my real favourite was King Roger's Hall. More wonderful gold mosaics, but slightly smaller, more human scale, room and for me (as a non-religious person) the trees, birds and animals appealed to me more than the saints. (If you ever wondered where the cross-eyed leopard on Ortigia Sicilia perfume packaging comes from, here is your answer!)

One of the landmarks in Palermo

This is one of the places you must see in Palermo. The ticket is quite expensive, but you can visit both the Palace and the Palatine Chapel. It is worth it!

Beautiful but expensive
Sep 2020 • Couples
The palace is nice, and the chapel is stunning but we are quite disappointed by the management of the place: three possible places to visit: a temporary exhibition, the halls and the chapel, because of time we decided to visit the chapel only, well, it was not possible on that day you had to visit, and pay, all of them, 16 euros each plus 5 euros for audio guide( of which the half was written and copying just what displayed ...) never seen anything like this in my life and been Travelling quite a bit!

Don’t bother booking online
Sep 2020
Amazing chapel is definitely worth seeing. But crazy booking system. Sign says you must book online which we did. We had to go through the hassle of navigating a confusing website and getting the ticket printed as that’s what it said you had to do (of course once we arrive people are using their phone version). You are given a time and told to arrive 15 minutes early (for extra covid measures) which we did. Upon arrival a very grumpy Security guard tells us we can’t go in until our exact time so we wait. In the meantime other people have bought a ticket there and then (despite what the sign says) and are let in immediately. So we are penalised for booking in advance to help them manage numbers.
