Chiesa Santa Maria della Pietà is a church located in the historical center of Palermo, the main city in Sicily Island. It was built between 17th and 18th Centuries in Barroque-style. It has an impressive main facade. Inside, the main nave is very well decorated with religious ornaments. Very nice church.

From outside its splendor seems overshadowed by a typical Italian issue – no renovation in years. You might justifiably wonder, if this is yet another “dead church” that is closed down. No, it is not. I don't know what are the opening hours (and, as customary in Palermo, this is kept in secret = no information at the church). I just went there on Sunday before midday when there was a holy mass, so I easily got in. This church is definitely a must-see in Palermo – a beautiful, breathtaking baroque interior compensates for a possible difficulty to enter the temple. Don't forget to go forth, close to the altar. In the last chapel on the right hand side, there are boxes with (if I am correct) 27 relics of various saints, mounted around the Christi cross.

Very beautiful church in Baroque style in the historic Palermo district. Magnificent ceilings, splendid nartex. To see absolutely by leaving a little of the tourist circuit.

Near the Foro Italico, near the Gate of the Greeks, this beautiful church is located a bit 'far away from the turist most visited places.
The church itself is small but admiring the facade I was struck by the beauty and also enriched and enhanced the baroque. Unfortunately it was closed, I only admire it from the road right in front, something exceptional. I would love to be able to enter.

We discovered this church while wandering around the neighborhood near our hotel. It was rather dull from the outside, but it was classic Baroque on the inside.

My favorite artwork are the churches with Byzantine influence. I put this church on that 'second tier' for me as it matches more the style of the Sistine Chapel. This church was built from 1678 - 1684 by Giacomo Amato. It is beautiful in it's own right, the ceiling is masterful. The gaudy side pulpits, the ancient baptismal font, all a sight to behold. I happened upon this beautiful church on accident as I was fining my way to La Mortana.

This is not one of the obvious 'main' attractions of the city but it is a minor gem and clearly much loved and used by the local population, there was a wedding when we passed for the second time. If you are in the area don't miss it.

Of a beauty that takes your breath away. Little known but actually wonderful. There is the font where Don Pino Puglisi and Paolo Borsellino were baptized.
