In the centre of Piazza Rivoluzione is Fontana del Genio - Fountain of Genius. The sculpture was created in 16th Century but the identity of the sculptor is unknown. It was originally located on the Fontana del Molo Nuovo but in 1687 it was transferred to Piazza Rivoluzione. It is striking fountain in a residential square in the Kalsa District of Palermo.

We passed through the Piazza Rivoluzione and its fountain the ‘Genius of Palermo’ during a one day stopover in Palermo as our ship was docked in the port here. We had opted to explore the city on foot and had prepared our own agenda with points of interest to visit. We were on the return leg of our walk and was making our way towards the sea using a tourist map we had picked up in the Tourist Information centre in the Via Vittorio Emanuele and our phones to navigate. When we came to this piazza we chose to sit down not only to rest from the warm Sicilian sun but also to check our bearings and route to our next destination and also admire the fountain. The piazza itself was fairly quiet and devoid of other tourists being slightly away from the city centre and a nearby bar had a couple of visitors. At the time of our visit, the fountain struck us as being slightly ‘strange’ in that we thought it portrayed a figure being bitten by a snake however subsequent investigations reveal the figure is actually suckling a snake. Having checked our whereabouts we left the piazza and made our way to the coast by way of the ‘Via Alloro’.
