La Fontana di Nettuno (Fountain of Neptune) is a really beautiful sight if you get a chance to visit it (it is a little further north than the main attractions of Messina, such as the Duomo, Campanile, Teatro, etc). It is located at the north end of a lovely park plaza, and depicts the god Neptune blessing the city of Messina. It was created by Giovanni Montorsoli, the same sculptor who created the Fountain of Orion near the Duomo.

Messina was a nice place to visit. Seeing Neptune’s statue was very interesting. There is not a lot to see in Messina but when you are on cruise it was fine.

This fountain which depicts Neptune, is found in a square a little bit out of the way from the rest of town. We only saw it because our guide took us there, so we could take pictures. If you are in Messina, you want to do everything that you can, so put it on your list To Do

This Carrara marble fountain is some 10 min walk from the main Duomo Sq., and is located by the sea. It's a beautiful fountain depicting Neptune, the God of Sea protecting Messina.

This statue is on the outskirts of the town but can be found after a lovely stroll along the waterfront. A good place to sit and rest up before continuing to explore the area.

While I may be prejudiced because this sculpture was actually done by my grandfather's uncle, I thought it was great, and I enjoyed seeing it :)
Having said that, I must say that it is in a very busy area in a very busy city. It is extremely difficult to drive in, or park in, Messina. If you can find a parking space in a lot somewhere, my advice would be to walk through the city a bit , see this statue and any other sights that you are interested in.

While in Messina a passionate, young, local guide told us a little secret about this fountain. Before the earthquake it used to look over the city, with it's hand stretched towards the city in a protective gesture.
However the earthquake which happened to have it's epicentre in the sea and thus caused a huge wave to crash into the city and help destroy it, pissed off the locals. Since Neptune was of no help against the sea, they decided to turn the statue facing the sea with it's back to the city!

This is more of a landmark than a park. The statue is good, but the lack of water in the Fountain tends to ruin the effect.

The fountain has seen better days, no water when we were here so just a statue. To describe it as being in a park uses a lot of poetic licence, it is more of a busy roundabout that hasn’t been maintained for a few years....still he does look out over the sea
