Taromina and Savoca From Messina Shore Excursion

I prefer to book directly with small local tour companies when possible. I am glad that I chose DISCOVER MESSINA for my tour to Taromina and Savoca.

I first planned to take a tour with them back in 2020, and when I had to cancel that tour, they were quick to process a refund. I had the same experience when I had to adjust the number of people in my recent booking, and when I had to change the date of the tour. I received prompt responses to my emails, and they were patient in answering all my questions about the tour and their policies.

I finally got to take a tour with them this week, and it was a very enjoyable experience. Katia, one of the owners, was our guide. She was very friendly, extremely knowledgeable, enthusiastic about sharing information, and her English was easy to understand. It was fun to spend the day with her. I enjoyed the cookie treat on the bus, and we were all given a bottle of water. We also got to taste other cookies and “Sicilian Pizza” at a local bakery. A nice addition to the tour.

I visited Messina on a cruise ship, and this tour was less expensive that what was offered by the ship, and the group size was considerable smaller. It is a much better option to book the tour with Discover Messina, and support a local tour company. The information about the tour, when and where to meet, and how to locate the guides was clearly communicated. They sent an email voucher, which was easy to add to my iPhone wallet. They had several tour groups going out that morning from cruise ships, and the guides and the buses were waiting for us when we disembarked the ship,

Taromina is a charming village. Wander the side streets to get away from the crowds and all the shops and restaurants. There is a lovely public garden at the end of one of the side streets that has great views—a 10 minute walk form the main street—just watch for the “Public Garden” sign and directional arrow.

Savoca was much smaller, calmer and far less “touristy.” And if you are a fan of the first Godfather movie, you will enjoy visiting the bar and the church and walking on the road where scenes were filmed.

If I am ever back in Messina, I will definitely book with Discover Messina again.

My husband and I booked a small group shore excursion tour through Cruise Planners with Discover Messina Sicily and had a very full Wonderful day touring Taormina. We started with a scenic bus ride from Messina to Taormina with our two Terrific guides, Sofia and Emanuela. Sofia kept us informed and amused throughout the ride speaking about the history, culture, and food of the area. Once there, Emanuela guided us to a Beautiful boat ride around the Gorgeous Naxos Bay, getting an Incredible view of Taormina (and the White Lotus Hotel) from the water. The boat docked in the middle of the bay and we had plenty of time for a Delicious swim in the crystal clear blue water which was such a Pleasure in the middle of the day.
After our boat tour, we met Sofia again and she toured us through the Greco Roman Theater which is an Incredible archeological site with Absolutely Stunning views of the mountains and sea surrounding Taormina.
The tour ended with plenty of time to browse, shop, peruse, and snack in the charming town of Taormina. Sofia told us not to miss the cannolis and that the secret is to find a place that fills them just before serving so the shells stay crisp. Emanuela told us that Roberto’s bakery made a great one, and I, who before this trip, did not care at all for cannolis, have not stopped dreaming of that one!
This was a Fabulous shore excursion – organized and well-paced with Great guides 0and attention to detail from pick up to drop off. We Loved every minute of our day and really felt that we had gotten to experience a taste of Sicily!

This was our favorite tour and tour guide of our entire trip! Our family of 6 adults did a full day excursion from the port of Messina starting in Taormina where we saw the town and explored the Greek theater, followed by a winery experience on the slopes of Mt Etna. Lots of driving, but the ride was comfortable, and our guide, Sara, was full of information that she tailored to our interests as she got to know us on the ride. When we mentioned we wanted to try the local cannoli, Sara made sure to take us by a great little store in Taormina where they fill the cannoli as you watch. Sara and Giacomo (owner, AND our driver for the day) watched the time and traffic, and returned us to the port in plenty of time. A wonderful day!

I’d leave a 10 rating if I could! This was the best tour we have ever been on and we’ve been on many tours. We went on the Private Full-Day Tour of Taormina, Castelmola, and the Theatre, and Katia is an outstanding tour guide. Her English is excellent. I’m surprised she didn’t lose her voice, she taught us so much. Not only did we learn about the highlights of Sicily, but we also heard about daily life, the habits of the Sicilians, and some interesting facts along the way as we drove around and visited this amazing place. We wouldn’t have gone to some of these with any other guide because they were places with people she knew personally. She took us to a bakery to get the best cannoli in Sicily. She took us for a tasting of an almond-flavored wine that we loved so much we bought a bottle. The restaurant she suggested for lunch had wonderful food. Sicily is beautiful and I can’t recommend seeing the Theatre enough. For a private tour, they have a minimum of 4 people and there were only 2 of us but it was worth every penny to pay for 4 people and it was quite reasonable. In my opinion, the only way to do excursions is with a private guide. We left Katia feeling like old friends and even got hugs from her and Giacomo, the driver, when we parted. I highly recommend this tour. Thank you for an unforgettable experience, Katia!

This was the best day! Can't say enough about our tour guide Sara. She made sure everything was perfect from start to finish. We were a party of 9 we shared a bus with another family. When we got to Taromia we could go off on our own for shopping lunch or she would be happy to tour with you. We did our own then we had time to be back on the bus & went down to get on our private boat excursion & it was absolutely wonderful the captain was the best he played music we were singing we had Champagne & fabulous cookies. We all jumped in the water for a swim. This was truly one of the highlights of our trip. Such a Fun fantastic day. I would recommend this to everyone.

We had a blast visiting Messina, the third largest city in Sicily, with Sara Lisciotto of Discover Messina Travel.
Sara took us along the water to see local fishermen and to spots where the Ionian Sea meets the Mediterranean, as well as to the Strait of Messina —the closest point between Italy and Sicily.
We went to the Bell Tower in Cathedral Square to watch the mechanical clock — a charming display of façade animals and figures that come to life, moving and making sounds — every day at 12 noon.
The high point was a two-hour walk in the Pelortani Mountains, beginning at Monte Dinnamare, passing native alpine wildflowers and enjoying views to both the Gulf of Milazzo and the Strait of Messina. Sara is a perfect guide – a fluent English speaker who is kind, knowledgeable and eager to share her passions for the outdoors and her native city.

The bus driver and guide were both very attentive. It was extremely windy and cold at Etna so the guide didn’t tell us much about what we were seeing he just left us to explore it on our own. He left us to explore Taormina on our own, also. It would have been nice to have more historical information and description of the area. We enjoyed the pizza lunch.

Our tour guide, Kat at Discover Messina, was outstanding. We were three couples on a perfect excursion to Taormina followed by a visit to the charming town (city) of Savoca. Kat was so entertaining and enthusiastic. You can tell she loves her job: she shared so much about the history of Sicily and of course, the films. I thought we knew it all, but she was loaded with new fun facts. And the scenery and the driver were excellent too! Highly recommend if you are a fan of Francis Ford Copolla’s masterworks . (And even if you are not it is still a really nice tour! )

What a great tour! We had a blast. We did the Isola bella and Taormina tour. All the guides involved in the tour were friendly and charismatic. They truly were excellent ambassadors for Sicily, and Italy in general. The young guides were fun to talk to and handled the groups with ease. The bus driver was experienced and maneuvered the bus well. We got a general sense of Sicilian history and were treated to spectacular views. The boat ride was a wonderfully refreshing experience. The cookies, Prosecco, and boat captain were the icing on the cake. The time in Taormina was fantastic. It’s such a pretty place. The tips we got were helpful in making the best use of the time we had. Can’t wait to return!

I was extremely fortunate to have Elisa lead our Messina tour in Italy. Me and my partner got lost initially trying to locate the meeting point (totaly our fault) and Elisa waited, trying locate us. When we located the meeting location she was hard at work trying to locate us. This is a testament to the amazing quality of the team and Elisa at Discover Messina. Elisa lead us on informative tour and manged our time perfectly. We were able to see things we would have missed had we not had Elisa. Elisa brought us to a cathedral were we were able to see the display of the mechanical and historical presentation of the cathedral that we would have missed had we not had her as our guide. She provided an excellent hand made pasta recommendation and ended our tour with the best canoli I've ever had. If you're looking for a guided tour look no further. Elisa A++++ Discover Messina A++++.
