It's a trek and an half up lots and lots of steps to get to the church but believe me the views alone are well worth the effort. Stain glass windows adorne the building and its really atmospheric. It was a Sunday when my wife and I where there so the local service was in progress and it was quite touching.

We were visiting Cristo Re and spotted this church on a nearby hillside from where were.
Inside the Santuario di Montalto (Shrine of Montalto), we found a quaint church founded in the late 1200’s with wonderful paintings of the Madonna and sculptures. The ceiling had interesting artwork among its beams.
Just like Cristo Re, the church and its esplanade offered wonderful views of Messina, its harbor, the Strait of Messina and the Italy mainland.

This Santuario della Madonna di Montalto is a Catholic Church with amazing views and well worth the long walk up to it.

Messina was destroyed by earthquakes a couple of times, then bombed heavily, so it is not rich with interesting monuments. The Sanctuary is barely a century old, with only a few artworks, but the patio overlooking the city and the port is worth the short climb. Messina is not a beautiful city but its site is spectacular and the view of the port, the straits and the Calabrian coast on the other side makes this location worthwhile.

We walked up to Madonna di Montalto and took the stairs at the end. You need to have a good condition to do it. The church itself is nice to see but not special. The Outlook from the platform is a mazing. You can make excellent pictures!

We climb up a few stairs to get to this church. Inside it's pretty simple but the hundred years old icon of the Vergin worth the visit. Outside it's a terrace with an amazing view above the beautiful city of Messina.

This place is overlooked by tourist but it is the best viewing point in Messina. The view from here is even better than Tempio Votivo di Cristo Re which is only 10 minutes walk from here.
We saw this church up in the hill and decided to find out way. There are steps to be climbed but it all worth it as the view is so beautiful.
Best photo opportunity of Messina and the harbour. And of Tempio Votivo di Cristo Re.
During our visit the church was closed - it closes between 12.30 - 15.00hrs.

.. to tell you the truth, the church itself is like many in messina.. the foundations are still there but the rest has been destroyed and rebuilt several times after the various earthquakes that have befallen the city.. but the view of the city, the harbor, the coast to the North to Capo Peloro and the Calabrian coast across the Stretto, that you have from the square in front of the church is incomparable and should not be missed..

We saw this church on the hill when we entered the city so we asked how to get there. It's quite a hike with LOTS of steps. You can take a taxi up if needed and it would be worth it! The view is spectacular! The church is beautiful - as are most in Italy. There was a place to refill your water bottle which I thought was very thoughtful considering the hike up. I would recommend this to anyone traveling in Messina.

We were in Messina on the Celebrity Constellation and decided to visit this church which we had seen from the ship. There are many steps up to this elegant building which took its toll on a very hot day. However the church itself is well worth a visit and the views of the Straights of Messina are stunning from the small plaza in front of the building.
