The church is extremely beautiful and full of history. We were accompanied by a volunteer guide, well-read and nice- who gave us the key to many secrets not only of the church but also of Catania. Very recommended!!

Nothing then a spectacular church. Another one dedicated to my beloved St. Agata. It was the first Cathedral of catania destroyed many times by earthquakes and eruptions. The highlight is the paint of Martirio di S.Agata. Under the church there is a crypt worthy to visit!

We stayed in Catania for 5 days, and only spotted this beauty on the last day by chance. It is not well marketed, but when you enter it takes your breath away with some amazing architecture. For a small fees you can also go all the way to the top.

According to legend Agatha lived during the third century. At the church the prison room where she was kept and tortured can be seen. Agatha refused to denounce her faith and was consequently put to death. A tragic story that was told, retold and added to, through the ages.

We passed by there while we were strolling in the streets of Catania (actually getting back to our parked car).
There are many more spectacular churches in Catania so I wouldn't recommend going there intentionally, unless of course I have missed something.
If you find or know what makes this church worth the detour so make it, otherwise, stop there on your way to a more interesting site.

Dear Sir/Madam, You should had at least bothered to pay for the guided tour: what you deemed not "spectacular" enough or not "worth the detour" it is actually a church in Franciscan style rich with history... there is much more than what meets the eyes. Before judging what you don't know, you should have acquired the knowledge.

This was the original cathedral of Catania, from 380 AD to 1094 AD, when the current Cathedral was built. Volcano eruptions and earthquakes destroyed the church several times, and the current structure is Baroque.
It's a very simple and linear church. A beautiful wooden structure with the statue of Christ is visible in the church.

There are many churches in Catania and they are all worth looking at. Thus particular one has its own charm.

Unfortunately only saw the outside as it was closed. The history of this Saint is amazing and there is another church where you can see the prison in which she was kept.

While the place is lovely, there was no air conditioning and my partner and I were far too hot to enjoy it. Also, while I understand covering up is respectful the woman at reception tossed two scarves at me with a very judgemental look. My partner was wearing the same length of shorts and tshirt and he did not have to wear anything extra, while I had to wear scarves damp with somebody else's sweat.

By contrasting the marble and lava stone, this church has a distinctive appearance. The exterior statuary says it all. The altar and interior is not the most impressive of other Italianate structures.
