This is unlike any other fish market I have been. It is a spectacle to see local live as it is. Amazing atmosphere colour and noise at the market. Amazing fish and the fishmongers cutting them with little dignity to the fish all add to...More

The Catania fish market is located in the heart of the city, behind the Baroque Amenano Fountain. From Monday through Friday, the streets near Catania’s duomo are transformed into a loud and smelling market. There are a lot of fish species and seafood, The sword...More

I love visiting local markets when traveling as I believe that it is one of the best ways to get the feel of a city and country. We strolled around, looking at all that fresh fish and the locals deciding what to put on the...More

Behind the Amenano Fountain and down a short stairway made of lava lies the fish market. As a tourist and not intent on a purchase, just wander around, admire the produce, watch the skill of the merchants and remember to take plenty of photos to...More

As far as fish markets go surely this is one of the most pitiful. Blood and guts on the street flies buzzing on food. I thought there was little respect shown for the fish - to think such beautiful fish like the tuna and swordfish...More

This is so authentic. Real people selling real food (very loudly). Don't wear your posh shoes as the ground is soaked with fishy water. As well as fish there is fruit, vegetables, cheese, charcuterie, meat. I assume "castrati " is Italian for testicles...plenty of those...More

The fish market has an intense marketplace atmosphere with salesmen shouting to get your attention. A great experience but you are in and out in 30 minutes

Interesting place, full of colours and smells, where you can buy fresh fish and sea food, but also fruits, for instance. Take a look if you like fish.

A fish market would not be on my list of things to see but occasionally you find that you are following your guide through. The pungent odour of fish is very evident as you near the entry point and then you enter this large market...More

This is a large fish market just off the main square and near the cathedral. This is definitely not your corner grocery or fish store. Open air and very fragrant with lots of fish smell. Large variety of fish on sale/display, many of which I...More

It is open on week days. I would recommend late morning as some of the vendors start to close after 3 PM. If driving try to find parking on one of the surrounding streets. Some require a fee.

Probably not. And the 1st of May is a Sunday when the market is generally dead. Better the day before when people buy fish and meat for the 1st of May bbq.
