About
The old workshop of the Napoli brothers is located in the historic center of Catania(Via Reitano, 55)near the Ursino Castle and the Pescheria market. It represents a heritage of great historical-cultural importance for the territory, since, from the time of Gaetano Napoli to today, here are handed down from generation to generation the"knowledge of the hand"and the rules of trade that allow the realization of all objects of artistic craftsmanship related to the tradition of the Catanese Puppet Opera.Gaetano Napoli founded the company in 1921,entrusting it to his sons and grandchildren, who have continuously continued the business. The Naples represent texts based on ancient tea towels and also shows for children and mixed technique shows. The collection includes puppets dating back to the late nineteenth century or early twentieth century, scenes, signs and theatrical equipment of great historical-anthropological interest, which recount an ancient tradition and well rooted in Sicilian culture

A Unique Opera
Apr 2019
All the elements of opera, so loved by the citizens of Catania, can be experienced through a colorful puppet presentation (Arranged by your hotel concierge). Some of the puppet movements are more naturalistic than others and you can't tell if it is because of the puppet's structure or the ability of one of the dozen handlers. It's fun to figure out. As in all operas, there is the grand spectacular ending, as exciting and as much fun for the adults as the children in the audience.

A Complete and Wonderful Surprise
May 2016 • Friends
I have had an interest in puppets -- I am not sure why they charm me -- but they do. I didn't realize until we got to Catania that there was a long history of puppetry in Sicily but also specific to Catania. You will see tourist versions of puppets for sale everywhere. But I wanted to see the real thing. We read about a Puppet Museum that used to be right in the historic area of Catania, but has since moved to a modern shopping mall about a 20 minute drive from the center city. You would likely need some help finding it or you would need to know Italian. Our guide, Davide, took it on as a challenge and once we found the mall the theater was easy to find. We knew nothing about the quality of the museum or if it would be at all interesting. But it was fascinating. Easily one of the top things we experienced in Sicily. There are really two sections to the puppet area -- the first is a large room with a display of historic puppets -- some made as many as 100 years ago. The puppets are LARGE -- not quite life size but almost. All of the puppets were made by the same family and some of the earliest puppets were made by the great-grandfather of the current generation. The family does all of the work and creation of the puppets -- from the wood carving to the making of the costumes and they use the traditional tools from years ago. It was like walking into a magic cave when I saw all of these large and diverse puppets on display. There are knights of course, but also dragons, witches, gentlewomen, devils, and ancient faces from all over. My heart beat fast to see this truly amazing work.
The second part of the area is a small theater where the family still puts on puppet shows. We were able to tour the museum and "go back stage" as it were, but we had to leave before the show started -- which would have been in Italian, but still I'm sure easy enough to get the gist. The puppets they use in these current shows are just as varied as the older ones, but they are smaller. Not tiny -- still quite large for puppets -- but instead of being 4 to 5 feet tall they are maybe 3 feet tall. They are still carved of wood and elaborately costumed. The owners explained that the family also does all of the shows and that the person who does the puppetry is different from the person who does the voices. And the same person does all of the male voices with the same female doing all of the female voices. He demonstrated for us with a devil puppet his son manipulated while he did these amazing voices in a loud bass voice that came as a complete surprise. The devils' eyes flashed red.
This is craftsmanship, showmanship, history, culture, folkart and an amazing experience not to be missed. If I could give this ten stars I would!

Wonderful experience for both, children and adults.
Oct 2014
Interesting for both, children and adults. We were unable to visit their workshop/museum because we arrived late on a Friday afternoon but we did manage to see their Pupi theater show and we loved it. The show is in Italian but it is quiet easy to follow the story. The theater is located in the heart of Catania - in the centre called Vecchia Dogana.

Puppet museum and thater
Apr 2014 • Couples
The puppet museum only takes 15 min to view. Puppets are original from the early 1900's and were used for 60 years. Now the family has created smaller puppets that are used for the attached theater. The language is italien so be prepared to do some translating. The theater/ museum is hard to find on Via Dusmet. Look for the arches of the railroad and the museum ion a large building port side of Dusmet

our visit to the museum was a delight. Ada,our exceptional guide, explained the history of the of the puppets and the writing of the shows. unfortunately the shows didn't start until September/October. We had a chance to hold a pupi and take many pictures. We recommend a visit while in Catania for adults and children. Thanks Ada for the great tour.

VERY NICE MUSEUM
Aug 2013 • Family
As I came to Sicily I had not even the slightest idea about the traditional Pupis. It was not until my visit in Catania that I have got to learn about them. Unfortunately, the shows with Pupis start in September, so I didn't have the chance to see it. But I really enjoyed the museum, where I could see the original Pupis from the turn of XIX and XX century.

Theatre is located in the heart of Catania (more precisly in the centre called Vecchia Dogana), just 5 minutes walking from historical centre. The attraccion consists of not only a theatre, but also the museum of the Pupi Siciliani and the bookshop where you can find local artcraft, postcards, typical sicilian souvenirs and also books. The guide could speak English and was ready to answer all the questions. I wish I could spend more time there!

UNIQUE EXPERIENCE
Jun 2013 • Friends
Important part of the Sicilian heritage introduced to you during one puppet show that is made with the use of puppets created at the turn of XIX and XX century (they are displayed in the museum next to the theatre). Definitely one of the must-see things there. Entertaining, historical and cultural event at the same time. Interesting for both, children and adults.
