The Basilica della Collegiata is a late Baroque church built in the 18th century. The church is also known as Basilica Maria Santissima dell'Elemosina, meaning Basilica of the Holy Mary of Almsgiving because the site was dedicated to the cult of Holy Mary of Almsgiving during the Byzantine era.

Stylistically, the design takes its cue from late Baroque with elements that are so decorative, it verges on Rococo. The façade has two sections, a lower section that is separated from the upper section by a balustrade. The lower section has six Corinthian style composite columns, while the upper section has a triangular shape, embellished with volutes. In addition, there are two niches containing statues Saint Agatha and Saint Apollonia.

Access to the church is via a wrought iron gate, then a steep staircase. The church is a minor basilica and has a floor plan consistent with its status. It’s divided into three naves with eight pillars each. The end of each nave also has an apse, including behind the high altar. Although the apse of the altar is considerably larger and oddly sombre. The ceilings contain frescos by Giuseppe Sciuti. Especially noteworthy are scenes of the Assumption with Mary crowned as queen in heaven

We were in Catania during the St. Agatha’s Festival in Febrary. The city was full of tourists and streets were overcrowded and noisy. When we went into this nice church we felt like in a quiet oasis. There was also beautiful organ music, we enjoyed it.

Elegant Baroque church overlooking Via Etnea. Certainly the most beautiful part is the façade, convex as if to welcome the faithful. The dimly lit interior features interesting works. Worth a visit.

Actually we passed by it but were too tired (really hot in August) to stop and get inside.
This was a miss I realized after seeing the pictures here.

We could have used a break to refill our batteries in the heat of August while enjoying the cool atmosphere inside the church as well as admiring the many pieces of art.

Don't make the same mistake as us, and if you happen to be close to this church, take the time to go inside, I believe you won't be disappointed.

Basilica Collegiata is one of the most beautiful places you can find in Catania. If you can, go in Saturday night, when you can find people singing. This amazing church should not be missed.

Unlike the Duomo, this church is in flamboyant Sicilian Baroque style in its interior decoration, as well as outside. Some eye-catching colourful ceiling paintings, a beautifully carved marble font and a lovely white wooden statue of the Madonna which is perfectly lit to emphasis its quality are just some of its delights.

In the heart of the old town just off Via Etna. Free to all. We visited in February on a two day stay in the town. We had not sought this building out but came across it by chance. Many buildings in Catania are made of dark lava stone, however this was fresh and bright. It was closed so we were only able to view from the outside.

Impressive sight and interesting to tour. Central to Catania. Give yourself a self guided tour. The inside is more impressive than the exterior in my opinion.
