The trip to the base camp at Mount Etna by coach is easy. The journey on the cable car very pleasant but after that it's a bit disappointing. The trip on the bus up to the crater is fun but once there you walk across...More

We took an Excursions Etna half-day tour on a reasonably clear (not snowing) day. This was late October, so a warm jacket was necessary. Amazing lava caves and flows, and a constant plume of smoke from Mother Etna. Lovely.

We went in a group on a coach trip & unfortunately our guide didn't speak very good English. However the drive up was a big wow & this was an amazing day out. You have to see it & experience this to appreciate the size...More

One of the reasons to go to Sicily is to see the only remaining active volcano. It was about 20 degrees at the bottom and about 2 degrees at the top. To see the smoke bellowing out of the crater makes you realise how fragile...More

Impressive in low key sense. If you are in Sciliy you have to visit Etna. The able car to near the top was a good experience with fantastic views. Once you have landed near the top the disappointment begins to creep in and you are...More

A must see, but sadly we visited as the clouds came down. It therefore was not worth the 30 euro each to go up in the cable car and we walked around a couple of the craters at 6000 feet. It was still a great...More

Trip to lava flows and caves, plus alcantara gorges, impressive. Etna was smoking and rumbling and nobody seemed to worry. Next day we took the circumetnea rail, recommended for views of the mountain. Great flora in spring.

This was a highlight of my two weeks in Sicily! The guide (funicular to shuttle bus option) was fantastic! It was a bit more of a hike than we expected but so worth it! Up, into, and fully around a crater from the 2003 eruption....More

I am trying to figure out if there is a way to do a Mt Etna tour getting picked up in catania in the morning but dropped off in Taormina after. I'm looking for a way to do it without a rental car if that is possible. Would hiring a private driver probably be the only way? If so, does anyone have any recommendations on a good one?

Hi, sounds like best way would be to do tour to Mt Etna from Catania there and back and then get a regular bus onwards from Catania to Taormina - really regular service and reasonably priced about 14 euro. We travelled from... More

I'm heading to Etna in June with local family but unsure if we can do 4x4 trucks and cable car once we get there or is there a way to book in advance? Or is the only option to do this through a tour? Thanks

I have visited Etna last year, but on a tour from Taormina. I am looking to visit Etna again over a period of 2/3 days in June/July to see how the current eruptions have changed the landscape. Are there any smaller villages closer to Etna that have excursions, i.e. Nicolosa, or public transport. Don't want to spend all the time travelling to and from the coastal resorts. Hire car not an option for me. I could stay at the hotel near the cable car station, but wanted to be further down the mountain to catch a little sunshine!!! Last time we were there the hotel was always in the cloud base!

Sorry to be of not much help: my first option when travelling is usually hiring a car. It's not expensive nowadays, and gives you a high freedom bonus.
