A very nice square located right in the middle of the biggest beautiful long main street in Catania. Piazza Stesicoro is one of the main and popular squares of the Old Town because its central location and its proximity to the typical market of “Fera o’ Luni“ .The square has a huge artistic and beautiful monument of Vincenzo Billini. The text written on the monument (A Vincenzo Bilinni A Patria.) The square is becoming a place for everyone as you'll see many people sitting on the square and taking time to relax of their past time and enjoy. On the side of the monument there is a church of St. Blaise which was originally built 1098, in front of the church its another piece of historical ruins in Catania.

Piazza Stesicoro sits along Via Etna. The Centerpiece of this piazza is the Monumento a Vincenzo Bellini which sits in the center.
The piazza is surrounded by several beautiful palaces and commercial buildings.
This is a very busy intersection and transportation hub.

An interesting rectangular square in Catania center. The ruins of the Roman amfitheater, 18th century Baroque palazzi and modern Corso Sicilia are, as it were, meeting here. All overseen by Sicily's greatest composer Bellini sitting high on his pedestal.
Moreover, there often are markets at the square where ordinary citizens meet up. The past and the present brought together.

About in the middle of the pedestrianized part of Catania's main thoroughfare, the Via Etnea, is the rectangular Stesicoro Square, from where also a wide road, the Corso Sicilia starts in the direction of the railway station. The place is attractive, but no match to the Piazza dell'Università or the Piazza del Duomo.
The square is surrounded by several palaces and there is a tall monument dedicated to one of Catania's most famous citizens, the opera composer Vincenzo Bellini. It was erected at the end of the 19th century, almost 50 years after the musician's death at the age of 34.
The name of the place though refers to the ancient Greek lyric poet, Stesichorus, who was born either in Calabria or Northern Sicily, but who died in the middle of the 6th century BC in Catania, then called 'Katane'. An imaginary bust of him can be seen in the Giardino Bellini a bit north from here.

I found it to be one of the nicest squares in Italy, mainly cecause its modest beautiful monument of Belini who was a great opera composer of Catania origin. Also the square is nice, big and with the atmosohere of Sicily.

One of the interesting squares in Catania . Divided into two sections by Via Atenea .
On the Western end you may find "Anfiteatro Romano" (See separate review) , with the beautiful Chiesa de San Biagio looking over it ; In the east section you may look at the statue of Catania born Opera composer Vincenzo Bellini ; At the very east tip , you may find Via S. Gaetano alla Grotta , occupying in the mornings a street "everything" market, and at the end of it - another interesting small church Chiesa S. Gaetano alle Grotta . Al around the busy Piazza - restaurants and cafes .

Piazza Stesicoro is on the opposite side of the ancient Roman Amphitheater. There are many cafes and seats around the public square. Quite relaxed when you sit down and have your cup of coffee after touring around other tourist spots. The statue of Vincenzo Bellini, famous composer, is erected on this square.

Okay there are lots of Piazza's in Catania, Sicily, Italy etc. This one is average to good, cant pick 3.5/5 we went there twice to the same patio cafe and once to see the ruin, unfortunately closed, and not much to see as its largely buried. Piazza was conveniently close to Via Etnea, our flat, a few supermarkets, one day there was a small flea market on the go and there was late day sunshine at the cafe - cafe was mid-price range, nice enough and the waiters were good.
