This area was used by phoenicians and tomans. Diuring the pisan period this area was lout of the wall of the city. In this site was locate the old arsenal. It was resored and now houses:
National Archeological Museum with Neolitic, early bronze Nuragic, Phoenician-Punic (the tophet of Tharros is evocatively reconstructed to represent the Phoenician-Punic period), mediaeval collections.
Collezione Clemente Susini . Anatomical waxes made by Clemente Susini were commissioned by the viceroy Carlo Felice between 1801 and 1805.
From the cittadella dei musei you can enjoy one of the best panoramas, your sight the most of the city. the harbour, the ponds, petto beach and a large part of the Gulf of the Angels

Half the fun here is wandering around after you've seen the museums - stop at a cafe etc. But the Archeological Museum and the handicrafts museum would be worthwhile even if they were in the middle of nowhere.

A lot of interesting exhibits - archeological and art. The place is a bit scruffy, but inside it is nice. Stuff is very helpful and polite. Ticket price is ok.

Beautiful museums - but.... I'm still confused as to why you pay on the way into the 1st and then *some are free and yet others you have to pay for ...hmm - I loved the jewelery and statues

Very nice museum complex. Next to the very important National archeological museum and the art gallery, you can even access unexpected topics, like Siam art, or anatomical wax, all very interesting.

It is worth taking a few minutes visiting the grounds even if you don’t take the time for the museums. The views are great as are the architecture and the gardens.

Worth a visit both for the view and the museum. And to get there, you walk through the old city or take bus 7 or 8.

This citadel has been adapted to house many historic artefacts as well as preserving some of the old features. The modernisation is used to protect the past. Visitors need to be aware of the lack of English signage, but there is a multiple entry ticket available on request. The views from the top of the walls are worth the visit too!
