They are the twin towers with the Tower of San Pancrazio. It was the other entrance of the medieval town. Its construction was completed in 1307 to protect the town. It’s made of white limestone, too. There’s small carved elephante on its south side on 10 metres high. Look up because it's not easy to spot! This building was a prison in the past, in 19th century. Now it’s the very impressive entrance to the Castello district. I think it’s woth a visit and some pics.

The first time we walked through this gate we missed the elephant! The second time we came from the other direction, and there he was! Cute, but not very big!
We could also see the portcullis quite clearly.
The tower was under renovation when we were there, so we could not go up it, and it was partly shrouded.

The Tower of the Elephant is the second highest tower in Cagliari. Thereis a small elephant on the side if you look up.
It was built by architect Giovanni Capula in 1307 and was one of the defense towers. It was a prison and in 1668 the Marquese of Cea, one of the supposed killers of the Viceroy, was imprisoned there and later beheaded. His head was hanged down from the tower for 17 years, but it was not the only one. Many other heads of prisoners who had been cut off were displayed at the door of the tower as a warning.

You actually walk up to it, take a photo of the elephant and walk away, Still figurning out why to bother, unless you have a thing for elephants.

We found the ‘Elephant Tower’ in Cagliari whilst our ship was docked in the port on a sunny Sunday in June. Never having been to the city before, we had opted to explore on foot and had prepared our own agenda with points of interest to visit. We had picked up a tourist map in the harbour for two euros, which was reasonably helpful in terms of landmarks and we used both this and our phones to navigate us around.
We had already done a circuit of the city via the cathedral, and amphitheatre and found our way back to the ‘Piazza Jenne’ where there was a large number of tables and chairs set up from the various restaurants and cafes serving the area. We got a drink here at a café and pondered what the ‘Elephant’ symbol on our tourist map might be (having originally expected to find an ‘Elephant’ statue somewhere).
After our drink and feeling a little more refreshed, we set off once again in search of the Elephant. Climbing what is a steep set of steps by the Santa Chiara church for the second time that day, we arrived at the top and after a further climb up the ‘Via Cammino Nuovo’ we passed a tower (the ‘Torre dell' Elefante’) and found the ‘Elephant’ which is a small statue mounted about halfway up the tower on a stone support to the left of the entrance. Ironically, we had passed the same way earlier in the day on route to the Cathedral and not noticed it! Still it was nice to have completed most of the landmarks on the tourist map and we then set off for the coast via the Saint Remy Bastion.

We were going to visit this famous tower in Cagliari, but we were a little bit disapointed cause of renovation work... it s a quite high tower in stone you can use to go down in the street from the place. The stairs are not so easy to use when going up... the sole interest is to have large scenery on the inner city....

This tower was being renovated while we were there. Hence we could not enter but it is in a nice part of the old town and you are still able to see it from the ground.

This is a scary climb. Four set of 30 stairs at a ridiculous angle (it's worse coming down. But the pay off is an amazing panorama of the city.

This Tower is an interesting historical place, situated at one of the gates of the old, historical centre.

It has several floors, around 4-5 maybe, but I could only bring myself to go up to the second one. I saw there people much braver, but the wooden stairs seemed just too steep for me ... I am sure though the view from the top must have been amazing.

The "Torre dell'Elefante" is one of the two towers overlooking the city of Cagliari, the closest to the seaside. Accompanied by well prepared guides you'll get the chance to know more about the plan and development of the tower and the evolution of the city itself. Spectacular views on the gulf and on the streets surrounding the tower are other great things the place can easily offer. Not really suitable for those who are scared of heights, since the descent from it looks vertiginous in spite of being absolutely safe; it might be challenging.
