The Basilica of San Saturnino is the oldest in Cagliari. It was founded in the VI century on the supposed site of the martyrdom of San Saturnino, the profile saint of Cagliari. However, looking at the church from the front side, I experienced cognitive dissonance. Quite a modern church with a nice glazed facade. The riddle is simple. The oldest parts of the church are not at the entrance - these are the side aisles and the apse. The presence of the new part is probably explained by the hit of Allied bombs during the Second World War. Catholic sanctity did not protect against "Liberators" and "Flying Fortresses". Around the basilica there is an old necropolis on which archaeological excavations are still being conducted. Look inside nothing but a few photos.

The Basilica di San Saturnino is a church built over the top of an ancient necropolis. You can see more excavations along the outside of the current church building. An unusual building and the history is explained on site. We were able to get inside to take a good look.
Very interesting site. We walked here from the centre city and continued on to the cemetery and cathedral at Bonaria from here.

This lovely paleochristian church even hosts the catacombs. With a very peculiar style, it is nowadays open.

This basilica is in fact all that remains of a formerly larger edifice that was mostly taken apart to build the Cathedral! All that remain standing is the main altar area and the cupola. There has been a lot of restoration as seen by the block numbers in the roof.
On each side of the main building you can access covered area when you can see the foundations and early archeology of the building (walls and graves). It is interesting to know that there has been a building on this site continuously since the 4th century.
This is worth a visit!

You cannot get near this place so there is nothing to see. It is obviously an ancient ruin but the gates are rarely opened. Also too many smelly cats.
