What an amazing market. Full of the freshest and beautiful produce typical of Sardinia.
Upstairs you have the fruit, vegetables, meats, cheeses and breads. Downstairs is the fish hall.
It’s open Monday to Saturday in the mornings only. Saturday is definitely a great day to see it with all the stalls packed and the locals getting their supplies, quite an experience to see the expert family cooks knowing exactly what they want to buy and the sellers who know them, skilfully preparing their order. Wonderful.
And definitely a great option if you want delicious food without going to restaurants, the food here is so cheap and top level quality.

An amazing indoor market the size of a city block with individually run stalls selling meat, cheese, produce, baked goods, bread, and other stuff. I cannot say enough good about this place. If I lived here, I think I would go daily. Everyone on the first floor is super friendly and helpful. Not a ton of English speakers but you can hack your way with some Spanish or French if you don't speak Italian. Its a lot of pointing and smiling. Most stalls will give you samples to try before you buy. Don't be shy.
Downstairs in the fish market. Freshest fish on the island and in the world. Harder to communicate here and some of the fishermen and sellers can be a bit "gruff". Personal experience downstairs is buy more than you need because it is so good. I asked for one swordfish steak, was convinced to buy two, charged for 2 and they put 4 in the paper. Same with shrimp (wanted 4, charged for 6 got 10!)
Best experience outside of the beaches in Sardinia was at this market.

This is a traditional indoor market where the locals shop which was amazingly laid out, colourful and precise. The fruit and veg was immaculate, along with the meat, cheese, bread, cakes and savoury pies was lovely to see, also tried a pie which was tasty. There were a few coffee stalls around where we had a coffee at one, it was a great experience mixing with the locals although not much English but managed to converse with a few of the butchers selling the horse meat and having a laugh. Worth a visit.

Fabulous market! Smelled of fresh strawberries and cheese when we were there! So colorful and diverse booths. Clearly the locals buy all of their groceries at this market. The vendors seem to know the regular customers. The area around the indoor market has clothing, linens, etc as well.
I appreciate that the vendors were very helpful but not pushy.

Unlike other Italian cities, where markets have a century-old history, San Benedetto is indecently young. It was founded most recently in 1957. The reason is simple, its predecessor Largo Carlo Felice was demolished by bombing Allied aircraft in World War II. Despite the fact that there are several more markets in the relatively small Cagliari, San Benedetto turned out to be a very large market. Its area is 8000 sq.m. on 2 floors. It is the largest market in Italy and one of the largest in Europe. Maybe the reason is the Sardinians' love for fresh products and the very process of market trading, which you are deprived of in soulless hypermarkets. Probably, the reason for the popularity of San Benedetto is the sellers. They are surprisingly friendly and tactful. We came to buy fruit, cheese, ham and olives for the road. It was already late, some of the traders were already winding down, but the market did not lose its appeal. On the market you can buy the main specialties of Sardinia - Bottarga (dried caviar), Prickly pear, the famous Sardinian honey and, of course, Pecorino cheese. The first three delicacies are for an amateur, but Sardinian cheese is worth trying for everyone. Pecorino sardo can be sweet (dolce) or mature (mature) depending on the aging period.

This is a two story local market that is loads of fun. We ambled through the fish section and then went upstairs. So many stands and types of products. Every time we would stop to look at the meats or vegetables, the vendor gave us samples. One place even gave us a whole bottle of wine to have with our meat and cheese samples. You get a realistic view of the daily diet and shopping of the locals. Extremely friendly and interesting place.

From fruits to chees or salami or fresh food you have a lot of options to take the breakfast or lunch here. I just go straight to the oyster stand and fresh shells. If you like this kind of food just go there in the morning and taste all the fresh food they have.

An absolute MUST for every Cagliari visitor. Be sure to go tues to sat mornings until 13hrs as the must-see fish market does not open on mondays. Great to walk through the overcrowded but secure aisles full of fresh fruit, vegetables and meat. Great deals just before the closing bell around 14hrs

Loved this place - sights, smells, bustle, amazing food! Mix with the locals and spend a fraction of what you would in a restaurant .. we loved buying up
lots of little portions of Salami, breads and cheeses (you can also try first !). The seafood market is out of this world.. market sellers very friendly and patient with our rubbish Italian and will throw in a freebie or bargain. Great for photographers too!

What a fantastic market! And every stall holder we met was full of personality and ready to make a connection - even in English - thank you all so much. Fish and shellfish - amazing. Cheese - wow. Fresh pasta - you have to buy the ricotta and saffron and eat with some sauce made with fresh tomatoes and parsley from the veg stalls. Foodies paradise 💕.
