About Andrea Jensen Sailing
Rachel and Colin welcome you on board Andrea Jensen, an 82 year old traditional gaff ketch. A day trip exploring the spectacular coast and Marine Reserve around the Alghero coast. Avoid crowded beaches and enjoy the Mediterranean in peace and tranquility. The trip appeals to all ages. We moor in beautiful, clear, calm bays for lunch, swimming and snorkeling (equipment provided). A freshly prepared lunch is included with a choice of local wines. The food that we offer is all bought fresh daily. We only take small groups so that we can provide a quality service ensuring ample space for relaxing and sunbathing (20m ooen deck), a welcome alternative to boats of the same size or smaller that take over 70 people! A good chance of watching dolphins from our bow net, makes this a memorable sailing trip. Help raise the big, red sails to experience an amazing day. Red and White wines are bought from Santa Maria La Palma, local Co-Operative. We speak, English, Scottish and are learning Italian.

As I sit here, unable to travel in a global pandemic, I am re-living holiday memories. I have been a regular visitor to Alghero over the past few years and each time I have spent a day aboard the Andrea Jensen. Conveniently moored by the harbour wall in the old town this impressive wooden sailing boat is a joy to spend time on. Colin & Rachel are very welcoming hosts and as the boat leaves the hustle and bustle of the harbour I can feel my self relaxing. Guests are limited so there is plenty of space to spread out and enjoy the peaceful journey out into the open sea with a morning coffee and fantastic view. As we head to the impressive Capo Caccia vertical cliffs there is the opportunity to talk to Colin and Rachel about the boat and the surrounding area, see the local beaches and watch the activity of smaller boats, kayaks and divers in the most beautiful coloured sea. Lying in the hammock at the front of the boat is a special treat especially when the dolphins come out to play! After leaving the cliffs the boat moors in shallower waters for a refreshing cool down swim/snorkel. Floats also available for those like me who like to take things a bit easier. All that effort is rewarded with a hearty lunch - antipasto, pasta pesto, ciabatta - and a beer (wine and soft drinks also available). This is usually a sociable affair with a chance to sit and chat to fellow guests although there is still plenty of space to spread out if you’re after a quieter trip. As tea and coffee are served we leave our mooring for the relaxing sail back. This is always a highlight for me - a chance, weather permitting, to switch the engines off, get involved in raising the massive sails and then enjoying the feeling of the huge wooden boat being pulled along by the wind. It’s so peaceful! And a great time to be in the hammock, sitting on deck catching the afternoon sun or lying out and having a snooze. The wonderful views of the old town mark the end of the trip as the boat pulls back into the harbour. I can’t wait to go back and do this again. I highly recommend taking this trip if you’re in Alghero. I have been on this trip with people of all ages and nationalities who have thoroughly enjoyed it.

A beautiful cruise to round the coast of Alghero. All the sails up and dolphins chasing along side. Was a trip we will never forget. The hosts were delightful, knowledgeable about the area and supplied a delicious lunch. We got to stop to snorkel in a quiet cove and because the numbers are limited on board there’s no issue with social distancing. We would do this trip again when returning to Sardinia.

I had an amazing trip on this beautiful boat! I loved the whole day as there was constantly things to do and sights to see. Rachel, Colin and the other staff members were so helpful, kind and entertaining and they provided an absolutely delicious lunch that suited everyone on board. There were brilliant views and we were able to lie in the hammock at the front of the boat which was an experience you don't want to miss! Along with swimming in the sea at a beautiful bay. This trip is well worth your time and money and it is an experience you will remember forever as it is so much fun. I cannot recommend this enough!!

On a dark day in December in the shadow of the 2020 pandemic, I come across these photographs on my phone. I am idly swiping through hundreds of pictures captured over the last two to three years looking for some escape from this interminable lockdown. And there it is in a collection of snaps taken from the pristine deck of the Andrea Jensen a couple of years ago. We took the day trip more than once on more than one holiday and looking at the photographs, in my mind I am there again on the deck of the stalwart wooden boat, feeling the sun on my shoulders and the reasuring thrum of the engine beneath my feet as we chugg out of Alghero harbour. The Andrea Jensen is an old shark boat, built in Denmark in 1939 and lovingly restored by her current owners Colin and Rachel. Andrea can be found moored at the harbour wall on the edge of Alghero old town. Amongst a forest of sharp white masts, stainless steel and fibreglass luxury yachts, the two masted wooden ship stands out  for its simple splendour and traditional beauty.  The Andrea Jensen is a sailing ship, complete with five magnificent sails and a diesel engine for maneuvering and taking up the slack on those calm windless days. An excursion  on this ship is a joy for restoration enthusiasts,  those looking for the romance of sailing on an old ketch, or the chance to be closer to nature than our jet-propelled age offers. On our first visit to Sardinia we wanted to pack as much as possible into a five day holiday snatched from our busy work schedules. We boarded the Andrea Jensen in the morning of the first day. Our internal clocks were still set to fast forward. After about 30 minutes of steady chugging on a mirror calm sea I felt the tension of city life and pressures of work start to drain away and turned my attention to the scenery. The vertical cliffs of Capo Caccia seemed to float ahead of us, graven images etched in their craggy surface and reflected in a mirror calm sea. We moored in a quiet bay for lunch, fresh salad, cheese, pasta, bread, all local produce and local wine. After that swimming and snorkelling, all equipment available on board at no extra cost. On the return to Alghero a breeze picked up enough to sail. Our hosts invited us to host and unfurl the sales and those who were game were skillfully coached through the process with full attention given to safety, and the principles of good seamanship. Andrea is a two masted Ketch with five sails and when full blown is a beautiful sight to see. For some distance conversation ceased as we listened to the wind in the sails, the gentle rush of water beneath and the creaking of the rigging above. We returned relaxed to Alghero and with new friends. Day trips take only around 12 people so we had plenty of time to get to know our fellow passengers, and bid fond farewells until next time. We have been back several times and were lucky enough to see dolphins up close, playing in the bow wave. Next year, we plan to go back to Alghero, take another trip on the Andrea Jensen, catch up with Colin and Rachel and their latest restoration work on this wonderful old ship. They plan to open again by Easter.

We spent a lovely sunny day on the Andrea Jensen with Rachel, Colin and Constance. After setting out from Alghero's old town marina, Colin steered the boat to Cala Dragunara as Rachel filled us in on the local history. At the stop, they served us a delicious lunch of antipasto, various meats and cheeses, crusty bread, followed by a pasta al pesto and our choice of beer, wine, or freshly made espresso. After a swim and a snorkel in the warm blue waters, we made our way back - the day was topped off with a sighting of two bottlenose dolphins on our return journey! Would highly recommend the tour for anyone in need of a relaxing day taking in Sardinia's beautiful coastline.
