- Maura MDublin, Ireland130 contributionsNice boat trip to the caves, good value. Pay separately into cave from boatEnjoyed our boat trip, and the caves were nice and easy to walk along. 2 hrs long. Well lit up. Once you come off boat you have to pay separately for entrance to cave which is time consuming and unnecessary.Visited October 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten November 4, 2023
- Chris Gus WoltmannQuito, Ecuador1 contributionEvocativeWe were here last August with my family. The walk down and up the steps was quite challenging for me I have to say! The views are incredible, you can literally see the edge of the island. The grotto itself is quite a small inlet, but I'd say it's a quite underrated place. A bit on the expensive side though.Visited August 2023Traveled with familyWritten January 17, 2024
- LuceyCorkCork, Ireland57 contributionsNeptune’s fabulous grottoWent to Neptune’s Grotto this morning at 10.45. We were down at ticket desk early and came back - they allowed people on from 10.10 approx. Sat up front and had a great view and were among the first to get off at the grotto. No queue at ticket desk here. The sea swells in front of grotto were nicely rocky but not no problem. The grotto is amazing- well worth a visit. Words won’t do it justice! It was difficult enough to understand the guide-heavily accented English but I can read up about it later. Boat staff were very friendly and helpful.Visited July 2024Traveled with friendsWritten July 5, 2024

Neptune's Grotto is a sad example of how a great natural site can be ruined by mass tourism and profit greed. The caves are absolutely amazing, but people are herded through them like cattle. When our boat arrived carrying several hundred vistors, there was a single person selling expensive additional tickets (€14 for adults, €10 for kids) required in addition to the boat to the boat tickets, creating a huge crowd at the cave's entrance that took 30 minutes to resolve. The masses are then rushed through the caves in a never ending queue by a guide with a loudspeaker. After 30 minutes, the herd is put back on the boat and ferried away. It is clear that the high number of visitors does permanent damage to this amazing cave. Given how crowded the site is, there is also a significant safety risk, should there ever be an incident that causes people to panic. Authorities need to restrict the daily number of people that can visit this beautiful place.

We were in Alghero for the day and took the opportunity to visit here. We came by boat and the tours of the cave are organised to coincide with the various boat arrival times. We picked a company from one of several along the port in Alghero. Can't remember the name of the company we chose but they were slightly smaller boats and charged 15 euros. Their seamanship was impressive - getting off the boat and into the cave entrance was a thrill in itself (as was the return).
The guide was very good and the presentation was in Italian and English. We were near the front of the group so everything she said was relevant to where we were. I think some things may have been repeated for those later in the crowd. They are used to dealing with large numbers - even having a one way system at one point to make sure everyone gets through efficiently.
This was the only place in our whole trip that requested we wear a mask. In total the ride to the cave, tour and ride back took around 3 hours.

Due to the current COVID-19 regulations, it is NOT possible to access the stairs without a ticket.
Hence, if you arrived by car and luckily found a parking lot next to the street, you *must* buy the ticket upstairs even if you do not want to have the guided tour but only plan to go downstairs and enjoy the view from the stairs.
I am writing this because in some comment from last year it was mentioned that it was possible to buy the ticket downstairs in front of the entrance of the grotto as well.
However, there is a nice stair down to the Grotta Pizzi e Ricami a few meters before the entrance. The stair is locked after a few meters, but the view down is nice here and anyway, nobody seems to care..

This is a recommmendable trip when you are in Northern Sardinia. It is not all terrific but the nature wonders are amazing.
Well, the steps are not so bad as many reviewers claim. There is sufficient possibility to rest or to stretch your legs on less strenuous parts. And they have improved the information sharing as the giuides use wireless microphones and there are speakers all through the cave So if you are at the end of the line of people entering, you can still hear the explanation though you are not yet at the correct spot. The guides even return to explain matters again.
The actual walk inside the cave is a couple of 100 metres and yes there are many others to share the 18 metres high chamber with you. But it all goes relaxed enough to allow you to admire the beauty of nature, Very special and yet still well serviced.
The entry prices are high for the length of the tour, but it really is every Euro worth it.

This is a real gem on the west cost of Sardenia. However I must say I was disapointed. Not with the caves itself - it is a beautiful example of what neture can create but with the way they organize the visit.
We booked 2 tickets for a visit at 14:00 hrs. We arrived on time, got the QR code scanned at the ticket office and went down to the cave. It was 13:55 when we arrived and the guide had already started the trip with more than 200 people before us. So, when we entered the cave the guide was in the second hall speaking to the microfon and telling stories that we could not enjoy being the the first hall.
Moreover, when the guide finished somwhere up in the hall "where musicians used to play" - she thanked all the visitors and left all the rest (standing in a lane of 100 meterls long) behind.
Ticket costs 14 euro/person and I think this is a rip off.
Shame.

We went by boat that is on the port in front of the entrance to the walls, name of the boat was Deborah, totally recommend we paid 16euros, is about 35 to 40 min to reach the place, the staff crew were amazing. They serve food and beverages at a reasonable price and they care about the clients. When you enter in the cave you need to pay another 16euros for the tour. We went at 10.45am what was good, not many people was inside so we had time to see and listen to our guide. The tour is about 20min more or less. Is really beautiful to see how nature works, the colour's reflecting in the water and on the stalactites were amazing. Tottaly recomend

Went here today by boat with the lovely Ursula.
Well, it’s just a great experience all round. The ferry is very comfortable, a large boat holding maybe two hundred passengers.
Thanks goodness we were able to sit outside on the boat as it was sweltering and very humid.
The caves are spectacular! A giant limestone rock like a small version of Gibraltar and at the sea level is a large entrance to a network of caves. They are full of magnificent formations of stalactites and stalagmites and pools with water that’s crystal clear. There’s a defined pathway all the way through with rope handles and steps. It’s well illuminated and there was a good tour guide explaining everything in Italian and English.
Just be aware that you pay at the port for the boat (€16) and it doesn’t include the entrance to the cave which you pretty much have no choice when you’re there. That’s another €14 for adults (€10 for pensioners).
But it’s worth it!

Arriving early, we were very well received at the checkout by showing our ticket, €14 per person, and our reservation, all purchased the day before on the site (there were barely 40 places left out of 200). We went down by the The staircase along the rock walls is splendid! You absolutely have to go there in the morning before 10 a.m. to have a place for the car along the road and calmly go down the stairs. The cave is very beautiful but... there are too many people and yet the boats don't arrive until 11am. The visit is a single-file parade, the company that operates the site obviously wants to make a lot of money (minus 1 star), the staff downstairs is very unpleasant, the "guide" would be better off being replaced by an audio guide or a downloaded leaflet, it's inaudible, he only spoke in English, Italian and German while there are plenty of French people, Sardinia's closest neighbor, when we ask him for a translation, he refuses!!! (minus 1 star). Finally, this quick visit where it is difficult to meet the other group is not worth 14€, it is excessive (minus 1 star). Apart from that, we have good memories of it, go there knowingly.

Hundreds of visitors preceded by a single polyglot guide who shouts into his microphone relayed on all the loudspeakers in the cave to tell them to move faster because another boat is going to unload its tourists at the entrance. Many elderly tourists who struggle to move forward on slippery ground and hinder the progress of others. In the end, the impression of having been mishandled and of not having been able to appreciate the view in the din of the speakers. Then it is the loudspeakers of the boats which again urge the tourists to quickly get back on board, while those who have descended by the 600 steps wait, in full sunlight, for us to agree to introduce them into the cave. At €14 entry, for 20 minutes of a noisy visit, it's the worst cave visit experience of my life. I strongly advise against it.

Neptune's grotte is a beautiful cave system at Cape Caccia on Sardinia. There are 2 ways of accessing it either on foot following a very steep and long footpath from the clifftop to sea level or by excursion boat from Alghero.
I don't like to write negative reviews but both methods have downsides. The boat is expensive because they don't tell you when you buy your boat ticket that you will have to pay an entrance fee of 14 euros when you arrive at the cave. The walk is long 2.5k and involves descending a large number of steps 600+ and the same distance to return, so you need to be fairly fit. The tour of the caves is guided with commentary in Italian and English however it is very difficult to hear as the caves have a very strong echo and people have tendency to talk over the language which does not apply to them. The steps within the cave are steep and uneven. There appears to be no emergency equipment or exit or evacuation plan, and should the lights fail, the possibility of a mass panic is likely, resulting injury or worse. There is no ventilation, and the air is warm and moist an ideal breeding ground for diseases.
We enjoyed the boat trip and the caves were very beautiful but if we had known the full facts we may have just taken a boat trip to see the coast.
