UNESCO's Alberobello and Matera from Bari

48 reviews
With a private guide, visit two UNESCO World Heritage Sites in one day. First, explore Matera, including the Sassi area, a complex of cave dwellings carved into the mountainside. Nearby, rock churches house 13th-century frescoes. Then it’s on to Alberobello to see the Trulli, an awe-inspiring collection of mortarless limestone dwellings, a prehistoric building technique still used in the region.

The lady in charge was busy smoking outside and at 11:45 AM on a Monday told us with a straight face that it was closed. My husband pointed the signs on the wall that says it is open from 10 AM to 1 PM on Mondays. She said very grudgingly that it will close in 10 minutes. I looked straight to her eyes and said, "We are going in and no, it will not close till 1 PM as it says everywhere". She once again grudgingly let us in, took our money, gave no tickets and let us stay in to see the wonderful 11th century scrolls and other artifacts. The scrolls are incredible and it is a must see if you are in Bari and not with a huge cruise ship or other tour groups.

We loved the Romanesque Basilica and Cathedral of Bari, and found many of its treasures in the Museo Diocesano. Well set out, good opening hours, friendly staff, reasonable entry fee, and ability to take photos of the wonderful treasures on display here.We enjoyed our visit, Thank you.

The Exulted scrolls are well explained on the surrounding walls, if you can read Italian. The pictures are one way up and the writing, the other. This was to enable the congregation to see the illustrations while the priests read aloud. Interesting writing and illustrations.
