Look for the prominent, well marked Tourist Walk signs on building edges and follow the directions. The walk covers about 20 highlighted sites and has a wonderful historic feel to it as some of the sites are hundreds of years old. I saw amazing churches, castles, museums the marina, a lighthouse and performing arts theatres. From the Swabian Castelo Normanno-Sevo you walk to the Catedrale di San Sabino, then to the famous Basilica San Nicola. The walk continues along Piazza Mercantile and Piazza del Ferrarese, then to the Theatro Margherita, Bari’s port – (Porto Vecchia), the Lungomari Murat promenade to see the Theatro Petruzzelli. It’s a magical route – well planned.

The city center is beautiful and also has a lot to offer. Castle from the Sveve era and beautiful churches as e.g. San Sabino and San Nicolas. Besides that lots of little shops and pasta makers who can see at work live.

This place is a wonderful place to experience the true old Italian ways of living. In fact, lots of people still life in old towns and have their survival from their stores and restaurants. A good way to know the area is just to walk and wander around observing places and people.

The city of Bari is the capital of Puglia region, in South Italy. Friendly people, excellent foods and a lot of monuments.

It was a great pleasure for us to wander around the narrow streets of the historical centre of Bari. We did not have any plan at all, simply wanted to be there, to feel the atmosphere and eventually to buy some souvenirs.

It was also a really special afternoon for us, as it was the end of our extraordinary trip to Puglia. We visited once again all the places we saw four days ago, this time in a more leisurely manner.

We took the train here from Taranto. It is very easy to get to Bari via train. The Old City Centre has many places to see, from the massive old fort, to the many religious buildings. It has the old European, narrow, windy streets, with many places to see and many little restaurants, shops and coffee shops to indulge in. HIGHLY recommended!

Rather mixed City, fairly run down, but with some great history if you can dig it out!

Amazing buildings including some of the palaces and the undercroft of the cathedral and church of St Nicola and perhaps the castle.

Mixed bunch of bars and restaurants, pushy simple locals in general.

Some basic food places, fairly basic food in general.

On the whole many far better towns/places to visit before here in Puglia.

Bari nowadays is a busy, modern city, so the old town is more like a refuge from modernity. Narrow streets (mostly pedestrianized), very old churches, parts of a wall, an old fortress, but still a living part of town with residents, restaurants, bakeries, etc. One particularity is that many of the houses have their kitchen at street level, and some with a door opening directly to it. In there, old ladies sit on the kitchen table and prepare fresh, local speciality pasta, whch they sell to passers by. A tradition in Bari which is worth trying
