This gate was built in Verona as part of the reconstruction of the southern fortress wall. Since they were built in 1532-1540, during the High Renaissance, it is not surprising that they were stylized as ancient Roman ones. However, at that time it was only the central arch, above the frieze of which was the lion of San Marco, the coat of arms of Venice, which owned Verona. Napoleon's troops liquidated the Republic of Venice and in 1801 the Lion of San Marco was demolished. The gate was empty for a short time, because thanks to Metternich's efforts at the Vienna Congress of 1815, Verona and Venice retreated to Austria and an imperial eagle appeared in place of the lion. Coat of arms of the Austrian Habsburgs. The Austrians did not limit themselves to this and added two more to the central arch on the sides, violating the stylistic integrity. In 1866, Verona became part of Italy, and the imperial eagle shared the fate of the lion. But the Veronese left the arches. We see them in this form.

During our visit in June 2019 the Porta Nuova was completely under wraps as it was undergoing renovations. The wrap does show some detail of the gate underneath but mostly it is adverts. A pity but gives an excuse to return to Verona one day.
