One in particular of St Francis is from the 14th century and one of the oldest in art history. There are remains of the old church beneath grills which are from the 6th century. The ceiling above the altar is simple and charming. The upper church is stunning, from the wooden ceiling, painted with the images of 416 saints to the altar, the Alighieri Chapel where the descendants of Dante are buried to St Anthony’s Chapel where frescoes were found behind marble during restoration. Worth every penny of the €4 entry. Make sure you are dressed appropriately too, covered shoulders are a must.Visited July 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten July 9, 2024

We thoroughly enjoyed the amazing wooden ceiling, very different from what we've seen. 416 saints in total. It also has a much older church beneath the newer church, in the basement. We are always so amazed by the architecture of these incredible churches throughout Italy. Well worth the time spent here.Visited June 2024Traveled with friendsWritten July 14, 2024

The upper church has a huge altar set in a beautifully painted wall. It is very tall, with a beautiful wooden ceiling. There are several richly decorated side chapels. Too bad we couldn’t access the sixth century church below.Visited June 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten August 7, 2024

The ceiling woodwork is most artistic in this church, and we’ve never seen anything like it. The walls are also a work of art not only in design but in the frescoes painted on them. Parts of the church are currently under renovation, so not all of it can be visited. This is one of 4 great churches in Verona and you would want to see all 4. If you enter this one first ask for the combo ticket for all 4. The cost is €8.00 for the combo or €4.00 to see one.

For me, the older churches, let’s say from 400AD to 1200AD, hold a special fascination and charm. They’re less sophisticated in construction and worksmanship and often sparer than the later churches, but I always feel they are particularly spiritual, holy. Places like the cathedral in Lisbon or the one I can’t remember the name of in Palermo whose simplicity and perhaps the interplay of light and dark has a special power. All churches look different depending on whether the day is sunny and what time of day it is. These churches seem to exemplify that phenomenon. I try to go several times at different times of the day to see it in action. It is fascinating. I don’t always have that luxury. San Fermo is not nearly as simple. In fact, the church has three sections, I believe. They are an Upper Church, which is the big one, the Lower Church older, smaller and far more spare than the Upper and I believe a third part, which I can’t remember, at this moment. The Upper Church has a lovely and interesting wooden ceiling. I have a special affinity for wooden ceilings. I just love the way they look and they are reasonably rare. So you don’t get to see one that often. The altar area has very pretty painted surfaces. There are also some lovely paintings along the side walls. A wonderful frescoed ceiling adds to the joy. I am sure that I have left out other elements worthy of note, but there is enough here to make you want to add this church to your Verona itinerary. You could legitimately spend a day just seeing Verona’s excellent collection of churches. I would allocate an absolute minimum of two days in Verona, preferably three to see in a reasonably relaxed and comprehensive way what the city the city has to offer. You can even use it as excellent base to visit magnificent Lake Garda by car, the Palladio treasure house called Vicenza and even the city that probably most tourists have never even considered to visit, but should, Mantua. So much to see and so little time.

You can get a bit. Hunched out in Italy as there are so many amazing examples. Interestingly many of them offer something different and this is no exception. The wooden carved inverted boat for is a wonder to behold with pictures of hundreds of Saints. Well worth a look

Our family of seven got the combined pass and made a quick trip to see this church.
After seeing churches/cathedrals all over the world, this one was unique because of the woodwork ceilings.
It is beautiful and worth a quick stop.

I enjoy looking at beautiful churches and the 4 main ones in Verona were worth seeing. You can either pay an entrance to each, which is 2.50 euros, or buy a pass for all four for 6 euros. Each had a different character to it but what they all had in common was a well laid out pamphlet available in many languages that made it easy to do a self-guided tour and the churches were all well taken care of.
