Another Lesson in Church Architecture

The churches of Verona offer some very different styles. This one has the various excavations of churches past. It also has some very impressive works of art by local artists.

If you are in Verona sight seeing this is a must. For us it was a little marred by all the scaffolding on the outside but I would hope this will be temporary. It is very interesting to compare the interior with other churches in Verona as you can really pick up how they have influenced each other.

Too many ostentatious shrines to men. Not enough God. More like an art museum than a church. The marble don't in the side chapel is impressive. But on the whole the building, despite its rich history, left me cold and did not fill me with awe as so many cathedrals do.

So refreshing to visit a major Cathedral for free. Most of the famous ones these days including Canterbury all charge. The numbers going in and just leaving a donation will more than keep up with the upkeep of any Cathedral. This one in Verona is well worth a visit.

The duomo is quite plain inside and very peaceful. The façade is interesting and the bell tower is beautiful. If pushed for time in Verona, I would give this a miss and visit San Zeno

You no longer have to pay to go into the Duomo itself, but there is a charge to see the Baptistry and the Excavation area. This is definitely worth the money! In the excavation area you can actually see down to the level below the current floor of the Duomo. In some places you can walk over plexiglassed areas and... More

The inside of the Cathedral is amazingly beautiful (it not over the top) filled with Renaissance artworks by Veronese artists. If you are an art lover of this period it is a must see.

We decided to visit here as we were staying in Verona for a week. Nice place with free audio/radio mobiles available, however one of them we couldn't get the English working . In the end this was sorted after 3 attempts with the staff . The information was good .

Made up of several interesting religious structures, Verona's cathedral complex is a must see for tourists. After entering (tourist entrance situated around the back and priced at 2.50 for a single ticket or 6 euros to visit five city churches - I wish we had known this last part!) you are encouraged to visit two smaller chapels first before entering...
