During my guided tour, we stopped here the longest , so I imagine it might have the most sites to see. The Madonna Statue is one of those: “you can’t miss it”, sites, and I highly recommend snapping a photo. It dates to the ancient romans and the fountain was built during the Renaissance. There’s also the Arco della Corso that was a bridge used by legal personnel to go from residence to office without going to the ground level. It was a beautiful Saturday afternoon and the whole town was buzzing with activities.

This fountain dates to 1368 and was constructed from materials salvaged from the Arena and the old Roman Baths. It was erected to celebrate the completion of the aqueduct built to supply Verona with water from the river Lori. The statue of the Madonna does not represent the Virgin Mary, but the 'The Lady of Verona' and symbolises the City. It was a Roman statue erected on Verona's Capitol Hill in 360AD. It had been damaged, the head missing, but Cansignorio della Scala, Ruler of Verona, directed that the statue be repaired and erected on the central pedestal of the fountain. I love history.

This is a fountain just in the heart of Verona. I didn't like that this square is all full of souvenirs shops and you can not enjoy the place.

Again, why not go see this? It's free, it's in Piazza delle Erbe, it will cool you off on those boiling hot days! It's beautiful and it was built in the late 1300's.

The pretty Madonna Verona Fountain is right in the middle of a square and surrounded by market stalls selling tourist tat.
A nice stop when sightseeing.

When your wandering around Piazza delle Erbe (or drinking coffee in it!) take a moment to look at this interesting fountain and statue. It's said to be the symbol of the city of Verona and to have been standing in this spot for some 650 years. Interestingly it's not a statue of the Madonna at all. In fact the body is Roman with the arms and head being added in medieval times! If you look closely you might spot the motto of the city - Est iusti latrix urbs haec laudis amatrix - which means something like 'This city is a dispenser of justice and a lover of praise'. Not sure about the latter part of that but certainly the statue makes a nice focal point for the Piazza, or would do without all the stalls!

This is a nice fountain in a beautiful square. It is not outstanding and overshadowed by the surrounding attractions but is worth a look at when you are in the square.
