Neighborhood: San Marco
The most famous sestiere (district) in Venice has one of the world's most famous squares, St. Mark's (Piazza San Marco). Anchored on one end by the basilica, clustered around it are restaurants, museums, shops, orchestras playing in the square, pigeons, the grand pink Doge’s Palace (Palazzo Ducale), the soaring campanile bell tower, an astrological clock tower, plus gorgeous cafes and restaurants like Florian and Quadri. Piazza San Marco is beloved by Venetians themselves. They book a table anytime, which offers a buffer from the fray. This grand outdoor drawing room attracts Venetians for a stroll too, especially late in the afternoon when the hoards of daytrippers thin out. It's simply a grand place to meet.

Despite the few negative reviews, I actually thought this garden was excellent. It provides you with a small spot to rest after St. Mark's square which very few people seem to actually know about.

I actually noticed mostly locals hanging out here in the morning. Walking their dogs, or playing with their kids.

You cannot fault this garden for being ugly or unkempt, in fact it seemed very well taken care of and I saw the gardener there early in the morning beginning his routine. Yes, it's small, and yes it's not like it necessarily has anything that I've never seen before, but it's beautiful and quiet in a city that is otherwise not very easy to find any peace in.

I would recommend coming here in the morning (I believe it opens at 8am) and just sitting and enjoying the local vibe.

Hidden gem. A few minutes walk from Piazza San Marco but a hidden gem and so peaceful away from the tourism. Beautiful and well kept. Lovely especially in the late afternoon sun. Very relaxing. Small. Take a little walk. Grab a seat on one of the many benches and relax. Don't litter. There are bins. The gardens are nicely kept so let's leave it in the same way! Free entrance.

When you walk south towards the water from St. Mark's Square, make a right along the shore on Riva degli Schiavoni; within a couple minutes, you'll find the tiny Royal Gardens (Giardinetti Reali in Italian & sometimes called the Palace Gardens). The gardens once belonged to Napoleon's Royal Palace and were designed in the late 1800's. The gardens are OK themselves, but the real treat is the different types of original artwork sold here. We bought 4 or 5 pieces from local artists like watercolors & charcoal drawings (a few we watched the artist create). Great prices! Also right here is the main Venice tourist office and water taxi stop.

Waked through here a few days ago with my partner and took a couple of photos. Pretty little gardens with shaded area – good to have a wander round or a quick sit down away from the busy square.

It is a simple park, but in Venice I really appreciated it as the city is crowded. Here you can sit in silence ( kind of) and without pressure.

Even though this is a Royal Garden, it is rather simple and you cannot expect to see much. It is well kept and there are some benches where you can sit and relax.

This is a rather underwhelming garden (despite its somehow regal name).
There's nothing unique to see here and a 5-minute stroll is all it takes.

Lovely gardens just a short walk from the canals. Nice shade with plenty of benches but having a picnic or food inside in not allowed.

We passed this after visiting St Marks Square, finding it closed on Mondays. We returned the following day and were disappointed, just gravel pathways with some flowerbeds, which were attractively planted. Looking around the whole garden would take one or two minutes. Plenty of benches to use this as a peaceful place to rest after lots of walking around attractions, nothing more. There is a water fountain outside to refill a water bottle.

This visit was on a rainy day in February, to a deserted small park with not much going for it.

However I have wonderful memories of this park from my first visits to Venice when I was much younger (and had no money!) It's a great place to relax in summer after a hard morning's sightseeing (Venice doesn't have much greenery so a bit of shade is welcome) right next to St Mark's Square. Plus if you're cash-strapped it's the spot to avoid expensive bars/restaurants and have a picnic.
