San Rocco is a beautiful small church that has paintings by famous artists like Tintoretto. The inside is beautiful and there is a fee to enter.

Another gem in Venice. Several Tintoretto's, St. Roch and Annunciation amongst others. The Dome and Apse by Il Pordenone, with the Altar by Fantoni. Raise your eyes on leaving to see a wonderful looking organ above you. Very pretty inside and another place to sit and get a little peace away from the "hotspots" of Venice...

Quiet, peaceful little church with Tintoretto paintings and powerful art explaining the life and dedication of Saint Rocco. Born (mid 1300's) to a wealthy family, he chose a life of servitude to the plague sticken. His parents died when he was in his 20's and he chose to give his wealth away.
Working among the plague victims, he fell ill and was banished to the forest where he was visited by a dog who brought him bread and licked his wounds, thus healing him. The owner of the dog followed the dog, discovered Saint Rocco and became a devotee. HIs uncle had him arrested when he returned to town and saint Rocco languished for 5 years in prison, rather than trade on the currency of his name. He did not want "worldly glory."
Often times his statues depict him showing his plague boil/scar, sometimes in the company of the dog who brought him food.
The art in the church vividly illustrates the depth of his human suffering in prison, the mercifulness of his administrations, and the cures attributed to him.
He put the lives of others above his own.
This may have been our favorite church in Venice. No admittance fee, pictures are okay with no flash, and there just aren't any crowds.

This church, rebuilt in XVIII century, stands behind the magnificent Santa Maria Gloriosa de' Frari, and aside the famous Scuola Grande di San Rocco; but when you're going to see these two masterpieces, don't forget to take a look to it. It's quiet (relatively), not crowded, and contains at least two wonderful paintings by Tintoretto. For a moment of peace.

In addition to visiting Scuola Grande di San Rocco to see the Tintoretto masterpieces, you can also make a brief visit to Chiesa di San Rocco (Church of Saint Roch), the adjacent building to see a few more Tintoretto works.
Chiesa di San Rocco (free entry) was originally built between 1489-1508 and then almost entirely reconstructed in 1725. It is one of the Plague churches of Venice. Similar to the famous building next door, there are paintings by the Renaissance master, Tintoretto, to be seen here.
The works are of much smaller scale than Scuola and because they keep the church rather dimly lit inside, viewing conditions are not ideal. Of note, the impressive ceiling fresco by Fumiani is worth looking over if you do decide to visit Chiesa di San Rocco. Lastly, no photography is allowed inside the church.
In the end, the church is conveniently located and free to visit. As such, if you intend to visit Scuola Grande di San Rocco and nearby St. Mary of the Friars, its worth popping in, even if for just a few minutes to have a brief look around.

This is an average-looking church, certainly not worth the 3 Euros entrance fee.
You can peek inside and see all that needs seeing.

The impressive marble altar and a number of large paintings are key features of this church that costs €2 to enter. If you first go to the jaw-dropping Scuola Grande di San Rocco, whose entrance is on the same square, you may find the church no more than ok in comparison.

This is yet another beautiful church in a city full of beautiful churches. There is now an entrance fee of 2 euros, but this is well worth it. Inside has some gorgeous paintings by Tintoretto. This is a place for some quiet reflection.
