The area
Address
Neighborhood: Cannaregio
Cannaregio is the second largest sestiere (district) with its busy Santa Lucia train station. Many transplanted Venetians commute from the outlying areas, “terra firma” to the locals, which is shorthand for any place that is not Venice. Two Grand Canal bridges serve Cannaregio, the newest (Constitution, 2008) still a local hotbed of controversy. Ponte degli Scalzi is a busy link to the train station. Nearby shops on the Lista di Spagna offer specialties like pastries and coffee that lure Venetians with a down-to-earth attitude. The Ghetto, where the Jewish population was segregated in Cannaregio, has five historic synagogues with an active Jewish community. The Fondamente Nove bustles with foot traffic to the Rialto and San Marco while vaporettos (water taxis) head to Murano and other islands. Side streets lead into quiet picturesque neighborhoods and palaces like Ca' d'Oro rise directly out of the water.

- Bill MArizona301 contributionsSo So train stationWe took the High-speed train from Milan to Venice and got off at the Venezia Santa Lucia station (Last station on the line). From the station we took the Water Taxi to the Rialto Bridge and then walked the street to the Piazza San Marco. The train station is average, but does not have seating, and you will find that to sit and rest you will have to sit outside on one of the many stone steps that lead down to the plaza and the Water Taxi boats. (Be very careful of selecting a boat, they stop at different landings along the Grand Canal). We did not spend the night in Venice, and only went to see Doge's Palace and Saint Mark's Basilica, we should have spent the night and a day or two. The ride back to Milan was uneventful, but cost considerable more than the ride to Venice, they get you one way or the other.Visited September 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten October 29, 2023

There are many retail stores, restaurants and bars located here. There is a lovely piazza waterfront in front of the station. You will find lots of touts selling their wares at this piazza. When one arrives by train its seamless to jump of an ACTV waterboat or a more expensive water-taxi to reach your accomodation in Venice from the station.Visited November 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten January 12, 2024
- Jacquie S33 contributionsLovely Station on the LagoonOur second trip to Venice. The station is large with shops and cafes etc. It is clean and tidy with lots of easy to read timetables and signage. Once you step out, theres the wonderful lagoon straight in front of you. Only downside is you have to use a token for the toilet which you can only get by buying something in the cafe where the toilets are situated.Visited May 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten May 22, 2024

- travelbob1New Windsor, New York1,135 contributionsJust needs more seatingThe only thing needed to make this a 5 star station is more seating, especially for many who have checked out of hotels and waiting for later trains. Otherwise the station is spacious with many of the expected shops and eateries. The schedule boards are easy to read and station personnel we spoke to friendly and helpful.Visited May 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten June 17, 2024

The booking counter staff I approached for guidance was extremely friendly and helpful despite the language barrier.Visited March 2024Traveled soloWritten September 30, 2024
- Janice CIssaquah, Washington73 contributionsGreat Train Service Venice to Trieste to join NCL CruiseWe took the Trenitalia train from Venice to Trieste to catch our NCL Pearl cruise. We took a water taxi (ordered one day prior from hotel) to this train station. Very easy to find our train. We got our seats about 30 minutes prior. When we arrived at the train station in Trieste, we walked less than a mile with our luggage to the port to board our cruise. Get the app for your phone to check in. Very good app. OR, check in online via the email they send you.Visited September 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten October 1, 2024

Train seats are not obviously sequential, so we went to buy tickets from a person. Not only did we pay for the tickets but we appear to have been charged an extra £20.40 (in cash). I was hurrying to get to the train on time so I’m annoyed at myself for not checking why we were paying the extra cash. Anyway beware and buy your train tickets in advance!

A very convenient train station which provides access to the Wonderful world of Venice. The station is rather easy to navigate with plenty of ticket kiosk in order to purchase and validate your ticket on the run. The boards are easy to read and access. They have a few shops to purchase items and food on the go.

Very user friendly station. Perfectly located on the edge of the grand Canal in front of the water taxi shop. Surrounded by eateries, it’s incredibly busy with the plethora of day trippers flooding into Venice daily

In transit to return home, we stopped enticed by the sight of interesting pizzas.... The kind staff made us sit down, where we enjoyed two excellent pizzas, with excellent ingredients.
My curiosity was approached by the manager of the restaurant Nicola, who in a friendly manner described to us the various processes and times of the dough dedicated for pizzas, bread, scones and "puteca". Asserting that all products come from Campania.
Well really what can I say SURPRISING.
CONGRATULATIONS to all the staff…

Our hotel was very near the station so we wandered over for a look around. There in the station we found gift shops and eateries of many kinds. KFC is in here but other better options are here, also.
It is as close to Old Venice as one could get (using public transportation) and so many people were pulling suitcases along and over the bridge right outside the station. We imagined the majority were other European citizens here for a vacation.

We are travelling to SAN Marco from Venezia san Lucia station . Ticket prices for taxis or ferries ?
Written July 13, 2019
The vaporetto prices are around 7 euros per person. Ticket counters are located right outside the station. There are two boats going in circles around the whole island. Both go to San Marco. Make sure to take the one with less stop. Believe it should be the one going anti clockwise. Will take around 40 minutes.

I will be travelling from Verona to Venice by train. Can anyone please let me know if it is easy enough to get on the vaporetto from Santa Lucia station to St Marks Square? Is it best to buy tickets in advance or get them at the station? Thanks in advance.
Written September 24, 2018
the vaporetto stop is just outside the main entrance to the trainstation. We bought our ticket upon arrival. Hope this helps.

Gracias!

what time she I arrive for a 1:00PM train departure?
Written January 26, 2018
20 to 30 minutes before. There is no point in arriving early because there are very few seats and you are just standing around because they announce the boarding platform 15 to 20 minutes prior to boarding. They board trains very efficiently.
