The area
Address
Neighborhood: Cannaregio
Cannaregio is the second largest sestiere (district) with its busy Santa Lucia train station. Many transplanted Venetians commute from the outlying areas, “terra firma” to the locals, which is shorthand for any place that is not Venice. Two Grand Canal bridges serve Cannaregio, the newest (Constitution, 2008) still a local hotbed of controversy. Ponte degli Scalzi is a busy link to the train station. Nearby shops on the Lista di Spagna offer specialties like pastries and coffee that lure Venetians with a down-to-earth attitude. The Ghetto, where the Jewish population was segregated in Cannaregio, has five historic synagogues with an active Jewish community. The Fondamente Nove bustles with foot traffic to the Rialto and San Marco while vaporettos (water taxis) head to Murano and other islands. Side streets lead into quiet picturesque neighborhoods and palaces like Ca' d'Oro rise directly out of the water.

Amazing workshop
Aug 2020 • Couples
I wanted a to make a mask and came across Sogna Veneziano Atelier. This place was amazing and very helpful. We had the workshop to ourselves and enjoyed every minute of it! If your are looking to buy a mask on Venice, why not make an authentic one instead! It’s a lot of fun!

Genuine Venetian Craftwork, Genuine People
Aug 2019
Just over a year ago, in April, I was married in Venice. We travelled around Europe for two months but one of the most wonderful moments in all my journey was the few hours I spent over two days making a mask at Sogno Veneziano Atelier. My wife bought this for me as a present, knowing my love for masks and ancient crafts, and it one of the best and most thoughtful presents as ever I have received. The mask I made is the one I'm wearing in the picture attached.

Not only was the two day short course enjoyable and enriching, sending me away with the basis of a whole new skill, the staff were joyous people whom it was lovely to meet. I remained with Ektor and Igor (sorry if the spelling is wrong) and the two wonderful women also working there that day (whose names escape me now, a year later, also very sorry) for hours after my allotted time a they helped me finish touches on my mask, helped me practice my vestigial Venetian language skills, and regaled me with the philosophy and history of Venice. Igor spoke with me at length about his appreciation for true tourists who wanted to experience the life blood of his city and how he never wanted to treat tourists as a 'cash machine,' as some other tourist experiences may wish to do. This is one of the few genuine mask shops left in Venice that use no pre-made parts or plastics or shortcuts. My only regret is that it has taken me so long to get around to writing this review.

I'll also add that this has been a hard year for Venice, with floods, plague, and the damage of cruise ships. Please, if you have time now or in the future, support genuine Venetian businesses such as this one. You will feel like you have really touched something close to the heart of one of the most beautiful cities on Earth.

Thank you for the good reviews, but you haven't make the workshop with us. We have a big space that contains until 20 people, and the mask we give to decorate are only in paper machè and not in plastic. Thank you in any case. Giulia Russolo Company Owner

Beyond Amazing!
Feb 2020
This was an incredibly unforgettable evening. Despite a late night, I couldn't wait to write this review. We cannot say enough about Madame Russolo, her team of people and amazing performers. What an enchanted evening. Tremendous care was taken in preparing the costumes and fitting. All details are thoughtfully completed and people were very accommodating and flexible to ensure we well taken care of. Even table selection was done with care and performers who were incredibly entertaining, personally engaging and sincere in their efforts to make it a perfect evening.

Expert preparation of the costumes is an understatement - everything was perfect. The evening was full of fun, meeting new people. We could not have asked for a more perfect event on the beginning of our honeymoon and while its a once in a lifetime experience, I can see us doing it again and again!

Thank you to all!

Wonderful experience!
Jul 2019 • Family
This was my second time in Venice but first with kids. The first time I bought a mask as a souvenir but in looking for an activity in thought what better way than to make your own souvenir. Our teacher Giulia showed us a selection of masks to design and paint but she did so much more. She talked to us about the history of the masks which go beyond carnivale. She said she would stop but we were very interested . My oldest daughter had studied Italian and I had studied online. Giulia was more than willing to speak a bit of Italian with us. As she sensed our interest she continued.
She talked to us about what led her to this life as a costumer and what that involves. She talked to us about life in Venice , what's it like to live and work there and school and dealing with canal floods. She helped and made suggestions with the masks but was never pushy. When she had to step away her daughter stepped in. When we were done she took pictures of us on a bridge overlooking the canal. If you're interested in a fun experience making masks you will get that and if you also want nice conversations at the same time definitely check them out. For our family the masks are a nice souvenir but the memory of a pleasant morning talking about life was even better.

A very great family experience. It is not about consuming, its about learning from the artist. Enjoy painting your own carneval mask and bring it home!

The place to go for workshops on Venitian masks!
Nov 2018 • Solo
Decorating white Venitian masks is a hobby for me and I had been wanting to participate to a workshop with a professional mask making artist in Venice. After researching online and onsite in Venice, I decided to go to Sogno Veneziano Atelier. With a little bit of experience in decorating masks, I didn't want to be with a large group of families and children just to paint a random mask. I really wanted to learn about the different technics used by Venitian artists. I met with Igor, Juliana and their daughter Camilla (hope I got this right!) who were very opened about it and adapted the atelier to my request without having to pay extra (like in some other places). It was the greatest experience! As I was alone (low season), they sat me at the artist's work table in the store and I started to work alternatively with the three of them. Igor and Camilla showed me the technics (in English), Juliana would do the same while telling me about the history of masks (in French). I had reserved a 2hr workshop. Ended up close to 3hrs! And then they so nicely proposed me to come back the next day to finish the mask with a last technic. I really felt their focus was not about time and money but sharing their passion for the art of mask making. I regularly go to Venice and this was by far the best experience I had. I would definitely recommend their ateliers!

Best part of my trip to Venice
Oct 2017 • Solo
Hello! I visited a year ago and have remembered my visit many many times since. I just hadn’t reviewed it on here til now. But the hosts, their beautiful shop, their talents, their patience, friendliness, humour, good English, good value all made my trip to Venice worthwhile. What a find this shop was! I was so happy to have met them. I painted a mask with their advice here and there and it went up on my wall when I got home. As did another one I bought from the shop. I miss you both and thank you for the rendition of songs including “Isle of Wight” by Dik Dik. (L’Isola di Wight). I had such a happy relaxed time with you both. Wendy x
