The area
Neighborhood: Castello
Castello is the largest of the six sestieri (districts), and the only one not facing onto the Grand Canal. More than half of Castello is situated within Arsenale, the naval base, which occupies over one-fifth the area of Venice. This gentrified maritime neighborhood feels busy but casual. Castello’s side streets are laid back, with small boats lining canals criss-crossed by laundry. Semiannual exhibitions add a strong artsy current to the Arsenale area. Via Garibaldi in Castello, with its shops and bars, has one of Venice's rare straight and wide boulevards. When a large ship turns around the Lido to enter the Giudecca Canal, the startling sight creates an illusion that it will run aground right on Via Garibaldi! Families treasure Giardini near the island's tip, green with rare trees and grass, and Riva degli Schiavoni is a popular spot for Venetians to take a stroll to watch the sunset.

We spent quite a while in this small shop - my wife shopping, me just looking around - and it was like visiting a Carnival museum. We bought a small mask for the kids, but there are some really interesting larger pieces that woudl be great for decor. Their products all appeared much more authentic than the tourist shop items.

If you want a genuine Venetian mask, Il Canovaccio has a large selection. Don’t buy a mask at the tourist shop. Spend a few more Euros for the real deal. Located near the Rialto Bridge.

These guys are fakes. On August 23rd 2018 I purchased a mask. I realized that they overcharged with a 60% upcharge than the next store. And the next store hand made their masks. So, we went back to the store to return. The guy pretended that he's going to call a woman. She yelled on the phone, was RUDE, horrible customer service and refused to return. Eventually, we left it there and left. They are horrible people and service, and fake masks.

Great little place where the masks are handmade and full of character. A lot of unique options if you really want to take home a treasure. The shopkeeper was very friendly and knowledgeable. Well worth the visit near St. Mark’s Square.

Very sad. They have absolutely beautiful masks and my wife and I went in there to certainly purchase one for 310 euros. Which in my opinion is alot of money. When we walked in the one lady in the store never acknowledged us. She continued talking to a friend which was in the store with her and never even stopped to say hello. Very unfortunate because we would have loved to take home the particular mask we wanted. My wife went back into the store a second time approximately 10 minutes later to maybe give it a second try and the lady STILL never acknowledged her and CONTINUED talking to her friend. Never the less we went to another store and gave my money to them.

Il Canovaccio is one of my top favorite mask shops--one I visit each time I've been to Venice and each time, can't resist their variety, in particular their animal, wind, and angel masks. The colors and textures stand out in eye catching detail as do their beautiful handmade costumes. The quality of their masks is outstanding; their prices more than reasonable for the high quality. Among their most unusual masks, giant winds blowing surrounded by gold leaf swirls and a cherubim or perhaps a seraphim? all in delicate gold leaf. Their customer service is excellent (and the sales person is also one of the mask makers!) and they did an incredible job wrapping and shipping. They've created masks for many occasions and mediums but they are incredibly friendly and kind when you are pondering over a choice in mask and able to repair any flaking in gold leaf or dings. Be sure to stop in when you're there!

We found this fantastic shop while wandering around Venezia on our way to somewhere else and we are so glad to have come across it. Seemingly everywhere you look, there are cheap, Chinese rip offs and it has become increasingly hard to find Venetian goods made in Venice (the same goes for Murano glass). Here you can see the workbench where the masks are made and maybe, if you're lucky, the people who make them. There is such a huge variety of masks that it boggles the mind. Are they expensive? Yes, as are all things that are handmade and well made. But when one considers how much of an artisan's time went into making it, the hourly wage is not that great. My wife purchased a small half face mask. We asked how long it took to make it and the woman figured that it took about eight hours from start to finish. If you are interested in seeing what a true Venetian mask store is like, seek this one out. It is worth the search.
