The area
Neighborhood: Cannaregio
Cannaregio is the second largest sestiere (district) with its busy Santa Lucia train station. Many transplanted Venetians commute from the outlying areas, “terra firma” to the locals, which is shorthand for any place that is not Venice. Two Grand Canal bridges serve Cannaregio, the newest (Constitution, 2008) still a local hotbed of controversy. Ponte degli Scalzi is a busy link to the train station. Nearby shops on the Lista di Spagna offer specialties like pastries and coffee that lure Venetians with a down-to-earth attitude. The Ghetto, where the Jewish population was segregated in Cannaregio, has five historic synagogues with an active Jewish community. The Fondamente Nove bustles with foot traffic to the Rialto and San Marco while vaporettos (water taxis) head to Murano and other islands. Side streets lead into quiet picturesque neighborhoods and palaces like Ca' d'Oro rise directly out of the water.

Whilst walking the back streets of Venice we came across il forcolaio matto by pure chance. The workshop door was open and the owner, Piero Dri, was at work finishing a repair to a Gondoliers oar... Fascinating to see him at his craft. Piero also makes the important Gondoliers 'Forcole', the piece of crafted work where the oar rests whilst the Gondolier propels his boat through the canals. Piero was very pleasant to talk to and did not seem to mind the few questions I asked him about his amazing skill and workmanship. One of the highlights of my 2 day visit to Venice.

We stopped by this small shop in a small street not easy to find but but really good to get there. Pietro is a real forcole maker and will show you how he repairs and build those gondola instruments key for navigation. He also sells lot of wooden objects made with the rest of unused wood and you can buy some very nice and not common Venise souvenir there. So cultural and shopping place not to miss.
