Neighborhood: San Marco
The most famous sestiere (district) in Venice has one of the world's most famous squares, St. Mark's (Piazza San Marco). Anchored on one end by the basilica, clustered around it are restaurants, museums, shops, orchestras playing in the square, pigeons, the grand pink Doge’s Palace (Palazzo Ducale), the soaring campanile bell tower, an astrological clock tower, plus gorgeous cafes and restaurants like Florian and Quadri. Piazza San Marco is beloved by Venetians themselves. They book a table anytime, which offers a buffer from the fray. This grand outdoor drawing room attracts Venetians for a stroll too, especially late in the afternoon when the hoards of daytrippers thin out. It's simply a grand place to meet.

A very cool classical music performance in a church with signature Vivaldi melodies! Everyone has to wear a mask due to current restrictions. The staff takes care to place people with distance in between the seats. Tickets can be bought online. Show up early to avoid queuing. We arrived 15 minutes early but had to queue anyway.

We went to two evening concerts given by the Interpreti Veneziani ensemble in San Vidal Church, not far from the Academia Bridge in the San Marco District. During the time we were in Venice, the ensemble were alternating day by day between two different baroque programmes (a lot of Vivaldi, of course), and two different groups of performers. There is only one word to describe their performances - superb! The concerts were unforgettable, and one of the main highlights of our week in Venice.
If you have any interest, however slight, in classical music, you should not miss the chance of hearing this ensemble, as it will change your perception for ever of how baroque music can be played on priceless old instruments in a wonderful church setting. The Interpreti Veneziani have been in existence for over 30 years; they have made many CDs and have performed in countries all over the world - though strangely, I was told by one of their managers, never yet in UK.
In the nearby church of San Maurizio, you can also see the Museo Della Musica, a small museum of stringed instruments, explaining their construction and history. The museum is connected to the Interpreti Veneziani, and is certainly well worth a visit.

I enjoy classic music, and based on the high reviews I was expecting something good (though for the price I should have known better). Sad to say, this is an average performance and doesn't worth the time (1.30 hr) invested on it. I would have preferred to use this time to walk around Venice at night, it is a beautiful city.
It felt like a show focused for tourists. The public had no experience, some of the musicians were too theatrical, and definitely the soloists where just average.
If you have extra time, then is OK, but if not, there are other better things to do in Venice

We had high hopes, but we just weren't impressed. We're in our early 30's, and we appreciate classical music and attend symphony performances in our city two or three times a year. This just wasn't anything special, and we felt like we wasted an evening in Venice for 45 minutes of something we could experience just as well at back home.
The location was not as intimate as I was expecting. The church was a full house, and there were probably 200 people in the audience. We were there in August, and it was uncomfortably warm and stuffy inside. It's open seating, so get there early to get a good seat.
The musicians marched onto the stage like soldiers, comically stiff, and began to play. There was no interaction of any kind with the audience. We had hoped for just a little bit of commentary that might put what we were about to hear into perspective. Even just a simple "hello and welcome" would have been nice. The music was played well. The musicians took turns leading, so you get to hear each stand out a bit. The cellist, whom others have described here as "passionate," was overly dramatic, and it was embarrassing in a way to watch him perform. He was certainly over the top, and it was an unnecessary distraction.
Overall, if you have many nights in Venice, then this is a worthwhile event. But if you only have a few nights, don't try to rush through dinner to get here. You won't be missing much.

This is a tourist concert by competent musicians, not a typical classical concert. If you are a regular concert-goer at home you’d do well to remember that before you go, which you should for the experience of hearing Vivaldi in Venice. If you don’t usually attend classical concerts or listen to classical music then I’m sure you will love the experience of hearing very accessible Vivaldi and other Venetian baroque pieces played in a lovely old church with great acoustics.
The four seasons were played nicely but in a great rush; completed in well under 40 minutes including a change of soloist halfway. After a 10 minute interval the second half lasted 30 minutes. The hyperactive cellist is very distracting to watch. I found it best to close my eyes, and then I noticed that he was really quite good!
Doors open 40 Minutes before the start so get to the queue at least 50 minutes before the starting time to get a good seat.

For a lover of Vivaldi's music this is must! The Interpreti Veneziani are fantastic.
We booked our tickets online well in advance and we arrived around half an hour before the beginning - we wanted to sit in the first row! We recognized the majority of the musicians from the videos on YouTube, but this was different!
The first part of the concert was the famous Four Seasons and it was more intense than usual, thanks to the great acoustics of the Chiesa San Vidal.
The second part of the concert was equally good: a Concerto from the L'Estro Armonico by Vivaldi and the Concerto in G Major for Double Bass and Orchestra by Giovanni Battista Cimador.
We respected the rule and did not take pictures during the concert, only before it - the Chiesa San Vidal is fantastic, especially the statue of a veiled lady, representing Faith.
We can only recommend this event and we are looking forward to be there next time we are in Venice.

Maybe it's good if you are listening to class music for the first time in your life but for those whom it's a habit the concert was disappointing. We did not expect anything special from it from the beginning but there were so many false notes.. and the church was overcrowded, we had an impression that they sold more tickets than there are seats in the church.
Ticket price is quite high as well.

Couldn't fault the musicians but I got a bit bored of the sound of just strings, prefer a fuller sound with brass and woodwind too, but they were extremely good if you like string groups.
To be honest I much preferred wandering from cafe to cafe in st marks square on Saturday evening listening to the different musicians playing. If you get bored you can wander on. I noted the cafés charged an extra cover for drinks with music but the majority of the audience stood and watched for free! Enjoyed the atmosphere in the square much more in the evening.

My husband and I went to listen to Interpreti Veneziani on the 22nd of April 2014. We were sadly disappionted. The musicians were out of tune many times, seemed tired and at times played carelessly. They almost seemed to hurry to get to the end. The church itself doesn't have particularly good acoustics for that kind of music. Vivaldi is almost a must when in Venice but I would do some serious research where to go in Venice to listen to a well played Vivaldi-consert.

How could you go to Venice without going to a Vivaldi-concert? That's exactly what we thought and why we booked tickets for the "interpreti veneziani". Off course, mainly Vivaldi concerti and a Haendel contrabass concerto. A pity for such beautiful music that professional musicians were not able to play in tune... For 26 euros it's a minimum I expect...

Is there a dress code we should be aware of?

Europe3,130 contributions
Hi ankie8378!
At the time of our visit, everyone in the audience was wearing a casual clothing. The concert is held in the San Vidal church, so any casual clothing which is appropriate for a church will do.
There are some videos on YouTube were one can see not only the musicians but also the audience, for example this one, but it was not taken during summer

Should I wait to buy a ticket the day of, or should I buy in advance?

We usually buy our tickets in advance, especially during tourist season. But there seem to be lots of people who buy theirs the same day. If you know your schedule, go for it. The only complication is that you have to actually go to the San Vidal church to get the tickets (I think - we've never purchased them online.) Either way, you'll have a beautiful evening!

How much does the ticket cost?

I saw them when they had a concert in Austin, Texas while on tour, so I do not know what the cost is for a concert in Venice.
However it is worth every cent. They were fabulous! And I can
just imagine how memorable it would be inside the beautiful Venetian church of an evening. Absolutely recommended!

Do these concerts start at 9 o clock sharp?
EgyptophileEngland

Yes, we agree with the other Reviewers. It starts promptly at the stated time but the start time varies with the time of year so check what time your concert is due to start. Yes too - get there early if you need to be near the front and even though a queue forms, some nationalities don't follow polite rules about queuing. There is also a good reasonably priced cafe/bar /restaurante just across the campo San Stefano where we had coffee and cakes for a few euros when we arrived early for the concert. Interpreti Veneziani are worth very cent and we too are envious that you will be enjoying this wonderful ensemble shortly,

Are the Interpreti Veneziani concerts given every night, 365 days a year? Are there regular months or days of the week that they do NOT perform?
Robert L
Breda, The Netherlands770 contributions
I sincerely do not know.
when we were in Venice in September, there were multiple concerts during the week.
However this musical group gives also concerts outside Venice, so they do not perform 365 days per year.
We made a reservation, via VIATOR, for Interpreti Veneziani Concert in Venice Including Music Museum (7100MUSICA) for the date of 25th, July, 2016.
We understand that the tour includes the Music Museum and afterwards the Concert.
The Voucher mentions that San Maurizio Church ( the Music Museum ) closes at 7:00 PM. The concert starts at 9:00 PM.
It is NOT mentioned where do we meet and if the Tour includes a Guide, or we should make it by our own.
Does anybody know how this would work ?

Contact Viator for more info. We just got our tickets the day of the concert through our hotel. At the church we saw concert at it opened about 8:30 and we got there 8:10 because it is first come first serve & we wanted good close seats. It was absolutely wonderful! Our music was four seasons by Vivaldi
Does anyone know how the seating works? What time would we have to arrive to get a good seat? Our show is on a Friday night at 9pm.

No seat booking available - just arrive early (30-40 mins?) and queue up outside. When the doors open go to your preferred area. We were on the front row and though the seats weren't comfy who cares? The canvas seats are conjoined so when the overweight lady next me adjusted her blubber from time to time, I was jiggled about in my chair too. Just forget life's little irritations and imperfections as you enjoy this wonderful music. Sorry this is a late answer - you may well have been by now. If so, lucky you.

We bought tickets on line for the Interpreti Veneziani in Venice and chose to pick them up at the box office. Is the box office at the San Vidal Church, or somewhere else in Venice?
Thanks.

Dear all,
If you've recently been to an Interpreti Veneziani concert and got your tickets at the box office, would you mind sharing the price? It's €27 if you book online, and I'd like to see if we can save anything by buying right there on the day of the performance (since many of the reviewers seem to have bought their tickets that way, and the non-4-Seasons program we want to attend may have a lower sell-out risk).
Thank you for your input!

I'm not sure, but since I enjoy supporting artists a couple of Euros either way is not a concern to me. It has been my experience purchasing on line is usually less expensive if there is no transaction fee. I usually do it through my hotel because they don't usually charge a fee and sometimes can get discounts.
Enjoy Venezia, it is one of my favorite places to visit. Also check out Trip Advisor for apartments, you get a kitchen, laundry facilities and more room for less expense.
