The church itself is nothing special, except that it dates back to the 9th century, and has some parts left from those days to prove it, as well as full remains of two saints, if you're into that sort of thing. Also, for ~2 euro...More

Go see it. Several Doges are buried in the crypt. The first church was built in the early 800s. It was rebuilt in the 1100s and replaced in the 1400-1500s. The church alone is well worth the visit. My favorite, however, is the crypt!

If you like churches... This is one of the top five in Venice. We usually go for Sunday mass and it is a total different experience.

Just beyond the Bridge of Sighs is San Zaccaria, and it was one of the highlights of our trip. It is a breathtakingly beautiful church inside, and below in the crypt are wonderful Andrea del Castagno frescoes. Quite a wonderful collection of art overall, and...More

San Zaccaria is in a section of Venice I had never toured before. The church alone is worth the effort to visit the neighborhood. I had come across its Bellini altarpiece on google and decided that on my next visit to Venice, I would stop...More

The outside is bright and faced in marble, a contrast to the dark interior. Artwork on the wall is incredible as befits a church that saw the funeral of several of the Doges. They are buried in the waterlogged crypt which you can visit along...More

In the fifteenth century the nuns of San Zaccaria wished to enlarge and enhance their convent church. The new church is the one that has free entry and has the Bellini. If you pay a small fee you can enter the space that belonged to...More

After the tourist overload in St Mark's square and the basilica and palace it is pleasant to come across a much quieter square just round a couple of corners. The entrance to the church is free. It closes at 12h for a very long lunch...More

Castello
Castello is the largest of the six sestieri
(districts), and the only one not facing onto the
Grand Canal. More than half of Castello is situated
within Arsenale, the naval base, which occupies over
one-fifth the area of Venice. This gentrified maritime
neighborhood feels busy but casual. Castello’s side
streets are laid back, with small boats lining canals
criss-crossed by laundry. Semiannual exhibitions add a

Hi There I suggest you ring the church on +39 041 522 1257 (open 10- 12 and 4.00pm -6.00pm) There is a very good chance that the respondent to phone will speak English. Don't try to look for a booking in August , they... More
