Iconic to Venice's waterfront skyline, this basilica sits on an island and boasts panoramic views from Campanile. Also not to be missed: the collection of Tintoretto paintings.

Top ways to experience Abbazia di San Giorgio Maggiore

The area

Address
Neighborhood: San Marco
The most famous sestiere (district) in Venice has one of the world's most famous squares, St. Mark's (Piazza San Marco). Anchored on one end by the basilica, clustered around it are restaurants, museums, shops, orchestras playing in the square, pigeons, the grand pink Doge’s Palace (Palazzo Ducale), the soaring campanile bell tower, an astrological clock tower, plus gorgeous cafes and restaurants like Florian and Quadri. Piazza San Marco is beloved by Venetians themselves. They book a table anytime, which offers a buffer from the fray. This grand outdoor drawing room attracts Venetians for a stroll too, especially late in the afternoon when the hoards of daytrippers thin out. It's simply a grand place to meet.

Offering spectacular panoramic views, some would say 'the best in Venice'. Despite being in full view from Piazza San Marco, the bell tower sees fewer visitors than that of St. Mark's Campanile, and as a result is a great way to enjoy Venice from above, without the crowds.

San Giorgio Maggiore is accessible by Vaporetto Water Bus Line No. 2.

Tip: Within the Church of San Giorgio Maggiore, guests will find a gift shop where monks sell some of the best (and inexpensive) sparkling wine that I had the pleasure of drinking whilst staying in Venice.

Went today at about 3pm.time limited as our Vaporetto pass was soon to run out. Walk through the church to the bell tower payment kiosk, and queued for over a minute before getting admission for 6 euros each. Up to the viewing platform in the lift. The views were outstanding. We chose here in preference to St Marks Campanile as we heard there was less queuing time and you can see St Marks from the top

6 Euros each to go up the belltower, though free for the kids. Certainly worth it as it provided a terrific panoramic view of the city, just across from San Marco. You go up in a lift so it's an easy trip. Not sure what it's like in Summer but when we went in January there were few tourists around.

This was a friend’s recommendation and we’re glad we took it. Just take a water-bus to S. Giorgio, and the church entrance is right in front of the station. You can wander the lovely church free of charge, but at the back is the campanile (bell tower), just €8 fee to take the lift to the top and the absolute best view of Venice you could possibly wish for. Even better, on a sunny March Monday afternoon there was barely anyone there, so no queues and no bustle, perfect!
PS if you’re reading this before 18th June 2023, there are also *free* guided tours of the otherwise inaccessible Conclave Chapel including Ai Weiwei’s “untitled” George & The Dragon artwork. Tours tend to start on the hour and half hour, and we had a tour to ourselves, which was excellent.
Best value in Venice!

San Giorgio is better to look at than to visit : its main attraction is the church gable and the view of Venice and the San Marco square neighbourhood, be it from the square in front of the church, or from the campanile. The church itself is in a very austere baroque style, with, as far as I was concerned, not much of particular interest. Therefore, you can skip this if you do not have much time.

When we were there, the gardens as well as the caffé were closed due to the COVID-19 situation, so I cannot review these.

Note that the campanile tower can be climbed with an elevator, but that cash only is accepted, no credit cards (3 € pp).

We went in the afternoon, and had an excellent view of Venice. Much of this Island is not really places for the tourist, we walked along and past the boat docs to the alleys behind it and everything was gated off or closed. The Abbey of San Giorgio was open, but some of the other buildings closed earlier than we had noted so we could not see them either. We did see a garden which was well maintained, but not something you would specifically take a trip to view. The belltower view is what you go here to see more than anything and it isn't as busy as the rest of Venice which was nice.

This is a nice looking church across the water from San Marco area. This is on an island pretty much by itself, so it can only be reached by boat. The views San Marco area from San Giorgio Island are spectacular. Entry to the church is free, and tickets to museum and tower can be purchased onsite. There are 3 ways one can reach the island: water taxi, gondola across from San Marco area, or vaporetto #2 B (water bus). The vaporetto 1 way ticket is currently €9.50 and is good for 75 minutes after first validated (first scan on the beginning of your trip). If you catch the vaporetto near San Marco/S. Zaccaria, San Giorgio Maggiore is the first stop which is less than 5 minutes. If you time your visit right, you will be able to visit this church using a single ticket as you can catch a vaporetto back to San Marco/S. Zaccaria before time expires. If not, buy a return ticket, or you can buy a 24hr pass for €25.00 per person. One can take great pics from the vaporetto too.

If you have visited Venice before, like a good photo location or have a water bus pass then I would say add this to your list. If its your first time in Venice I would possibly skip this site.

You get some wonderful photos of Venice and San Marco square from the bell tower (btw its cash only no card payment), its 6 euros and 50m tall with a lift to take you up and down. If you are only doing a church and a stroll. around the island then I would say 20-40 mins is enough depending on your interest in churches and religious artwork.

It did look like there was a house/ another building and garden you could visit on the island however when we arrived it did not appear to be open which would make thee 7.50 water bus fair more worth while.

The church is large, airy, and even feels a bit empty. There are uniform painting-centric chapels with few decorations, plus an impressive choir. Going up the campanile is the main highlight (requires a fee).

Covid times, tours not that frequent, so suggest morning. My uncle and I, did al three tours. 25 euros with viual, audio guide. One cannot visit anything else bar the Church and bell tower alone. The Vatican chapels are from a competition set in parkland, if you are not into architecture leave this bit out so tour is cheaper. The Foundation is in use, so visiting is guided, lovely architecture and the best fun bit, just because, is the labyrinth, so one can also see the amazing library. Boat taxis 10 euros return from St Marco. Island has coffee shop and the bell tower, 6 euros, has a better, far superiror view thatn the one at St Marco. A nice morning or afternoon away from the crowds. Alicia was a great guide, audio and visual in various languages.
