If your visit to Venice has enhanced your appreciation of Tintoretto, this church is required. He is buried here (his home is nearby), and the church contains monumental paintings. His Last Judgment is especially powerful

This located about thirty minute walk from San Marcos square, It is worth the walk. And take a side walk through the old Jewish portion of town. If you are staying at the Boscolo Venezia it is only two blocks town the canal.

This is a church not to be missed (the English Church) - the Tintoretto's are lovely and it is quite something to be in the space where Tintoretto worshiped and in the neighborhood where he wandered. His home is just over the bridge in Calle dei Mori.

We went when it was supposed to be closed so the place was empty and tranquil we had a quick look around before exiting.

I visited this church because it is located right by the Boscolo Venezia Hotel, in Cannareggio. It is really worth it! It is beautiful on the outside, located in a very peaceful place, and has also a pretty interior, including several paintings of Domenico Tintoretto, the son of the famous Venetian painter Jacobo Tintoretto.

If we hadn't taken a walking tour of Venice with our guide, Simona S., we wouldn't have seen many wonderful sights that are off the tourist's main path, like this church.

This part of Canneregio is quite ordinary, even a little dull with some indifferent modern apartments. The church, too, is quite plain on its exterior. But, it is where Tintoretto did much work and there are stunning pieces all around the altar. He lived nearby and is buried in the church. The walk to the church from St Marks is... More

Madonna dell'Orto is away from the crowd and can be reach by walking through the former Jewish ghetto. Use Google map to stay on track and cross the canals at the bridges. When you arrive, the church is unassuming from the outside but the real special aspects are inside in the sacristy. Titian and Tintoretto adorn the walls and can... More

Staying in Cannaregio

Neighborhood Profile
Cannaregio is the second largest sestiere (district) with its busy Santa Lucia train station. Many transplanted Venetians commute from the outlying areas, “terra firma” to the locals, which is shorthand for any place that is not Venice. Two Grand Canal bridges serve Cannaregio, the newest (Constitution, 2008) still a local hotbed of controversy. Ponte degli Scalzi is a busy link to the train station. Nearby shops on the Lista di Spagna offer specialties like pastries and coffee that lure Venetians with a down-to-earth attitude. The Ghetto, where the Jewish population was segregated in Cannaregio, has five historic synagogues with an active Jewish community. The Fondamente Nove bustles with foot traffic to the Rialto and San Marco while vaporettos (water taxis) head to Murano and other islands. Side streets lead into quiet picturesque neighborhoods and palaces like Ca' d'Oro rise directly out of the water.
