Neighborhood: San Marco
The most famous sestiere (district) in Venice has one of the world's most famous squares, St. Mark's (Piazza San Marco). Anchored on one end by the basilica, clustered around it are restaurants, museums, shops, orchestras playing in the square, pigeons, the grand pink Doge’s Palace (Palazzo Ducale), the soaring campanile bell tower, an astrological clock tower, plus gorgeous cafes and restaurants like Florian and Quadri. Piazza San Marco is beloved by Venetians themselves. They book a table anytime, which offers a buffer from the fray. This grand outdoor drawing room attracts Venetians for a stroll too, especially late in the afternoon when the hoards of daytrippers thin out. It's simply a grand place to meet.

This beautiful church features a very impressive exterior, but also an interior to match with numerous works of art displayed within.

I have to admit, right around this point on our trip it started to feel like "another Italian city, another church". However, after entering, you'll be reminded that every church is different, and this one in particular is spectacular in it's own special way.

The name of this church translates to "Our Lady of the Lily." Inside this church is a painting by Rubens and several Tintorettos. Admission was included in our Venezia Unica city card.

A very beautiful Baroque church well deserving a look. It is part of the Chorus circuit of churches.

Although the church is dedicated to the Virgin Mary with a lily, there is little to say about this. The second name of the church of Zobenigo is also not reflected in any way either in the interior or on the facade. The surname of this Slavic family that financed the construction of the church remained only in the name. But the Barbara family occupied the entire facade. Without any appeal to religion. So much so that John Ruskin called it "brazen atheism." The family settled down in the company of Honor, Glory, Virtue and Wisdom). At the same time, it had nothing to do with real victories. For example, the commander Antonio (in the center wearing a hat) was dismissed for incompetence during the defense of Candia (Heraklion on Crete). Candia itself, along with Split, Corfu and Padua, also flaunts on the facade. Probably, Goebbels learned from Barbaro the thesis: The more brazen the lie, the faster they will believe in it!" As well as the facade of the interior of the church is also later Baroque. The church boasts the only Rubens painting in Venice, "Madonna with Child and Young St. John." Surprisingly, considering that Rubens painted paintings on an industrial scale (he made sketches himself, the rest were apprentices). And even the authorship of this canvas is disputed by many researchers! However, there are two paintings by Tintoretto, Indisputable...

Yes, it is worth the 3 euro entrance fee... beautiful facade, beautiful interior. Read up on the history before (or when) you arrive. The church has remained the same since 1681 and contains many artworks (including Tintoretto and Reubens). I feel like this church must be typically overlooked. In fact, during the busy month of July there was no one else inside! Don't be one of those tourists that pokes their head inside the church door, snaps a photo and leaves (yes, this did happen during my visit)... just come on in and enjoy a quiet slice of history in Venice.

Originally founded in the 800's, this church underwent an extensive renovation in the 1680's. Funding for this effort was made possible by a bequeathment made by aristocrat and Venetian Admiral Antonio Barbaro who died in 1679. The architect honored this benefactor by installing the Admiral's sculpture front and center, above the door. The four brothers of the Admiral stand in four niches to the right and left of the door.

This church is especially unique in that the architect incorporated reliefs of the Admiral's 6 military out-postings. These are fascinating in that they show places like Rome, Corfu, and Padua as they would have been configured in the 1600's. Rome includes a little picture of Romulus and Remus and the she-wolf who nursed them.

The church facade is very light on religious symbols ( a couple of angels), instead showing military/battle scene elements. Judging from the swarthy, confident Admiral's statue, he was every bit the swashbuckler (thus being a true protagonist). His exploits would, no doubt, have been filled with tales of his heroism and idealism, rescuing damsels in distress, defending the downtrodden, and in general, saving the day, or in this case, saving the church). His statue depicts the four virtues in the corners, reinforcing this noble image.

We looked in here on our way to the Gallerie. There is a 3 euro charge for entry and there are a variety os pictures and sculptures to see inside. It is difficult to work out why some places charge and others, equally impressive, have free entry.
