As part of a surprise trip to Italy, I took my mom to Venice for Carnival in February 2017. I knew we needed fabulous masks, and Atelier Marega did not disappoint. Through email correspondence, Maria Elena helped select two gorgeous feather masks that were perfect for us. I paid for the masks in advance, so the day we arrived to... More

It was a most special experience to rent costumes and buy masks at Atelier Marega in Venice as part of our 2017 Carnival experience. They worked enthusiastically and patiently for over two hours as two of us were fitted for our Carnival costumes, our friend Shing danced a little jig to celebrate & then they hosted a most successful Cazanova... Even under the intense siege of cheap made-in-China plastic masks, authentic artisans like the ones in Atelier Marega continue to stand their ground in preserving the Venetian arts despite of the disadvantages. Atelier Marega is one of the few shops that continue to handcraft the traditional carnivals that give Venezia her famous identiy. Like typical artisan shops, the masks are... More

This is a wonderful shop for higher end mask collectors. All the masks are hand made, painted and decorated. The owners are very helpful in showing their wares. This is not a very big store but if you want a quality mask, this is the best place to go. They offered us a 10% discount when we paid cash as... More

This is a thriving shop with unique, beautiful, authentic Venetian costumes and accessories. You will find lots of things made in China and finished in Venice....But not at this shop....it is all made in Venice and is all beautiful. Will return for Carnival next year!

It was amazing. I am not a normally proportioned person and fitting me is usually a challenge. They were able to fit me into an attention grabbing authentic costume that made my Venice experience unforgettable! I felt like a celebrity with tourists taking pictures of me in my costume.

Right between St. Mary of the Friars and Scuolo Grande di San Rocco, there is both the workshop where they sell masks, and around the corner there is just a store. I went to both but the mask I wanted I found in the store, not the workshop. The woman that worked there was lovely and as we still had... More

10/10 would reccomend for authentic handmade, exquisite masks at good prices. Most range from €20-€45 but there are cheaper and more lavish masks available. Cannot reccomend enough!

Staying in San Polo

Neighborhood Profile
San Polo
The Rialto Bridge is the most famous sight along the Grand Canal in San Polo, smallest of Venice's six sestieri (districts) and by far the busiest neighborhood. Morning Venetians arrive to peruse the markets for fish, fruit and vegetables, while shops display goods from cheese to wine to desserts. San Silvestro and Rialto Market vaporetto (water taxi) stops add to the steady stream of foot traffic. San Polo is defined by churches including Basilica dei Frari, one of the most important churches sought by art lovers.
