The Rialto Bridge is the most famous sight along the Grand Canal in San Polo, smallest of Venice's six sestieri (districts) and by far the busiest neighborhood. Morning Venetians arrive to peruse the markets for fish, fruit and vegetables, while shops display goods from cheese to wine to desserts. San Silvestro and Rialto Market vaporetto (water taxi) stops add to the steady stream of foot traffic. San Polo is defined by churches including Basilica dei Frari, one of the most important churches sought by art lovers.

I am a senior Italian American who wants very much to become fluent in Italian. I have been to other schools in the U.S. and in Italy (Bologna), but Venice Italian School is by far the best. They assess your skill level (if you have any) and develop a program to address your specific needs and develop your Italian language skills. They are especially helpful with learning to speak Italian, not just read or write it. In class you actually engage in conversations that enable you to learn to have a normal, every day conversation. During the pandemic shutdown, I did weekly tutoring sessions via Zoom which enabled me to not just maintain but advance my conversational Italian. I have been to the school three times, each time for a week or more, and have experienced small group classes and one-on- one tutoring at the school. I cannot recommend this school more highly. And the classes are very reasonably priced. If you really want to learn to speak Italian, this is the place for you. And it's in Venice!!!

I have been learning Italian for more years than I care to recall, and a few years ago my husband started learning the language with Diego in the UK. Diego moved to Venice and we followed him. My husband loved the lessons so I had some. I learned more in a few weeks than I had learned in several years of classes locally before that. I had reached a plateau- Diego spotted very quickly where he could help me and I made a leap forward. I am now more confident with the language and use words and phrases far more appropriately.

Dear Diego and Lucia -

Just a quick note to say thank you for such a wonderful learning experience! You told me, Diego, that I would learn the foundations for my Italian studies and that I’d have fun while doing it. You really delivered on that promise - I have a MUCH better understanding of the language, some new confidence and an excitement to keep learning. Lucia, I enjoyed our classes so much - thank you!

Yesterday, I visited the Libreria Acqua Alta and I purchased Il Piccolo Principe in Italian which I will read with pleasure! It will go next to my French copy and it will no doubt inspire me to keep up with my studies.

Thank you again and until next time!

Fondly,
Craig

I have been to the Italian Language School in Venice twice, once for 2 weeks in 2016 and again for a week in 2019. I've attended schools in the U.S., listened to tapes/CDs, and spent 2 weeks at an Italian language school in Bologna. The Italian Language School in Venice is simply the best. The director, Diego, has designed an exemplary program for small groups and individual tutoring. I've done both and in each instance improved my Italian language skills exponentially. I wanted to improve my conversational Italian, and I was able to do that after each of my sessions at the school. It is family run, casual yet structured, with skilled instructors. I will keep going back (and plan to in April 2021). If you want to improve/learn Italian, this is the best school you could choose. And, bonus: it's in Venice!! It gives you an excuse for an extended stay in what I think is the most beautiful city in the world.

I have just spent a week at Venice Italian School and I fully concour with all the other positive reviews. This is indeed a top notch school and a great place to learn Italian in a nice and relaxed atmosphere. The school is family owned and you do feel that both the owners and the teachers pay a lot of attention to detail and take a genuine interest in every student. The school offers both classes for small groups or individual lessons. The students I met were all grown ups who liked to combine learning Italian with experiencing everyday Italian life. My small group also had lessons outside the classroom so we learned and practiced Italian while walking around Venice with our helpful teachers. I learned much more than expected within my 5 day course and it was great fun. I´ll be sure to come back again. Prices are reasonable and the location of the school in Campo San Stin is excellent. All in all highly recommended.

January 2015. I spent a month in Venice, a city I visited as a student nearly 50 years ago. With only a very basic knowledge of the language I booked a course of lessons at The Venice School hoping to improve. By the end of the month I was able to make myself understood and to talk on a simple level to the people around me.

Diego Cattaneo teaches Italian with dedication and a lovely sense of humour in thoroughly relaxed surroundings.

I recommend this school very highly indeed.

I took private lessons from Diego. It was a great way to get a foundation for elementary communication with Venetians in my day to day activities. He was very responsive to the goals I had for learning and applied simple yet effective methods for describing language concepts and rules. Diego is very professional and takes his work seriously while also making the lessons fun. I learned a lot and had a good time while doing so. Well done Diego!

Sono d'accordo con gli altri studenti. I spent five days at the school, which I found on Trip Advisor. I share the enthusiasm of the other reviewers. I had private lessons with Michele (of Tuscany), who threw in a fascinating summary of Italian politics. At the end of my brief stay, I could introduce myself in a simple way, order easy things in a restaurant, get transport as needed in Venice and make out newspaper headlines. (It did help that I know French and Spanish). That's not bad for 10 hours of lessons in five days. The school offers a great way to dive in and try to speak. Diego, who co-owns the school with his sister, is charming, highly professional and flexible, so he makes learning Italian the joy it should be. This is a good value and I recommend it.

For our one month stay in Venice we (German/ m/f 40+) were looking for an Italian school with a personal touch. Within that time Diego and his wonderful team of passionate teachers brought us from close to zero to a nearly fluent conversation. Our 4h morning classes with max. 3-4 students were very individual and fun to attend to. In fact we were really looking forward for every new day at school. Our co-students were smart and fun and theire stories were enriching our lives. Our teachers were passionate, good hearted and helpful in every way and reflected for us only the best Italian images. This way we not only learned a language but also a lot about Italian customs and way of life. The teaching materials are simple and effective and there is a lot of focus on conversation which followed our personal interests. After three weeks already, we were able to have an easy conversation in the streets of Venice. What a rewarding feeling of success this was! We would highly recommend this school to anyone who wants to immerse themselves in a truely Italian experience.
