The most famous sestiere (district) in Venice has one of the world's most famous squares, St. Mark's (Piazza San Marco). Anchored on one end by the basilica, clustered around it are restaurants, museums, shops, orchestras playing in the square, pigeons, the grand pink Doge’s Palace (Palazzo Ducale), the soaring campanile bell tower, an astrological clock tower, plus gorgeous cafes and restaurants like Florian and Quadri. Piazza San Marco is beloved by Venetians themselves. They book a table anytime, which offers a buffer from the fray. This grand outdoor drawing room attracts Venetians for a stroll too, especially late in the afternoon when the hoards of daytrippers thin out. It's simply a grand place to meet.

Delightful small museum in Venice

What an awesome accidental stop! We popped in because of a sign announcing Venetian Glass Week, and discovered that there was a superb, if small, exhibit of works by international glass artists. Admission - free! So we gave it a try.

It doesn’t take long to explore. There are a few rooms downstairs, which showcased works by younger artists on our visit. These ranged from interesting to unnerving. Upstairs - and it’s a stunning staircase - works by better known artists we on display in a number of rooms. The rooms themselves are pretty amazing, too, including several library rooms filled with antique books, and the most glorious antique blown glass chandeliers - don’t forget to look up!

The whole thing took less than 40 minutes to walk through, if that, and there weren’t a lot of visitors. Worth a quick stop on your Venice visit.

The most memorable spot in Venice
Jan 2019 • Couples
Admittedly, I have not been inside the Venice Institute of Science & Art as it had been taken over for a G8 summit, however, throwing caution to the wind, I thoroughly enjoyed the grounds, sneaking past a partially roped off area that led into the garden. This was spotted whilst on one of the canal buses and had been worth further investigation as I had spent the day fruitlessly trying to find somewhere to propose to my now wife. The setting couldn't have been more perfect and the outcome was a pleasing one.

Wonderful experience. Not sure it was a regular offering or a special event, we had the most delicious buffet lunch.
Awesome food in a spectaculor setting.

Awesome building and free exhibit
Apr 2016 • Couples
FREE entry to a beautiful building. They were hosting some Dutch artist (sorry can't remember the name!) who was really good, and quite funny. I don't think trip advisor has the right address though so be careful.
