A must-see place if you are in Venice! Historical finds from different eras of great interest are exhibited. To make the visit it is necessary to book. It can be reached by ferry number 20 which leaves near Piazza San Marco.

Today, with a group of friends from Treviso, I visited the Mekhitarist monastery on the island of San Lazzaro degli Armeni. Wonderful visit thanks especially to Eleonora, EXCELLENT Guide of the monastery who accompanied us to discover this enchanting place through a story that has been able to weave with history, art, culture not only Armenian but also European, Caucasian and world. A competent, precise and engaging Guide to whom all my gratitude goes. The history of Armenia and its people is a past that cannot be forgotten because it concerns not only the protagonists of this affair, but also us as men and women of a time that, unfortunately, seems to have not yet learned from the mistakes of the past.
Highly recommended visit, ask for Eleanor ;)

It's a unique place in the world. Scripture dating back to early Christianity kept in refrigerated rooms. Many books recovered by monks. A place of peace. You feel the presence of God. But you have to schedule the visit before, since the island is a private property.

To visit the monastery, which is situated on its own island in the Venetian lagoon, one needs to take the 3:10 p.m. vaporetto #20 from San Marco. There is only one tour of the monastery every day, at 3:25 p.m., which starts once the vaporetto has deposited all the passengers. The tour ends in time for visitors to catch the 5:25 p.m. vaporetto back to San Marco.
The energetic guide repeated her explanations in both Italian and English, which made the tour a bit longer than it could otherwise have been, but with the benefit that it was accessible to all who were there. The monastery is quite, peaceful, and well tended. The tour took us through the courtyard, the church, the dining hall, the museum, and the library. It was fascinating to learn about the history of the place and the Armenian people, be surprised by original art by Aivazovsky (who visited the place in 1840), and learn about Lord Byron’s connection to the monastery. Highly recommended!

In order to reach this tiny island, you have to take the 3:10 pm vaporetto at San Zaccharia, right in front of the Londra Palace, a few steps away from the famous Danieli Hotel.

For the return to Venice, the vaporetto picks up the visitors at 5:25, just after the guided visit has ended.

After a small ride in the boat, you will reach a beautifully maintained Armenian monastery. They offer a guided visit, in different languages (Armenian, English, Italian, French... I think they would add other languages if someone needs it).

The place is very interesting and attractive. The island was centuries ago a leper colony, and it was afterwards abandoned. Later on, the Doge of Venice donated it in perpetuity to Mekhitar, an Armenian monk who founded the Order of the Mekhitarists.

During the visit of the island, the monks tell you about the history of the Armenians in Venice, and proudly tell you interesting anecdotes and show you lots of beautiful art masterpieces. It is a peaceful place, really worth visiting.

we have wanted to go to the island of san Lazzaro for ages. You take a water bus from St. Marco/Zaccaria at 1510, and number 20.
We were greeted at the Armenian Monastery by a young lady, who took the Italian and English speaking guests on a tour of the Monastery, showing us their amazing collection of art and artefacts, and showing us the refectory, the church and the library. She was extremely good in explaining everything to us. I knew nothing about Armenia, and found it very interesting. After the tour, there was free time to spend in the garden or cloisters, where there are pictures of Armenia. The bus back goes at about 1725 - well worth a visit for an afternoon if you have an interest in history, or printing. Some of the oldest books on show

Went here while staying in Venice. Get the boat along the canal in San Marco trip takes about twenty minutes. Then you wait to be let in by the monks. Tour is six euros and starts at 3:35. Only one a day. Very interesting. The tour is done in different languages. We had a monk that did French,English and Italian . The other monk would have done other languages. You go in the church, museum and library. Takes about one and a half hours. Then there is a little shop where I bought a jar of rose marmalade made there. If you get there a little early like we did you can walk around the garden or sit on a bench and relax. We spent a very pleasant afternoon there. Worth going if you have the time.

Great place to visit if you have time in Venice and already visited San Marco and Doge's Palace and looking for something special.
This old Monastery founded by Armenian monk and philosopher Mekhitar is situated on the island. And it has it's unforgettable atmosphere and artifacts. Monks or special guides provide a very interesting tour for you. Diving you into the rich Armenian history connecting with the history of whole humanity. The most interesting thing that every person can get access to the incredible library of the monastery if he or she proves their needs of course.
You can get there only once per day. You have to get vaporetto nr.20 from San Zaccaria pier in 15:10.
Entrance fee is 6 euro per person. It takes about 3 hours to get there, tour and way back.

Taking the boat no. 20 from San Marco Zaccaria at 3:10 p,m, (the only available for visits), after a few minutes you reach this island rich in history and culture, where an efficient tourist guide shows you all the beauties of the monastery. Wonderful garden where you can see several species of roses. Monks produce a delighful Rose Marmalade (to be bought at the local shop)

On this island is the monastery of Armenian Catholic community which has the third largest collection of Armenian manuscripts. Everyday there is a tour of the island and the library and it is most interesting to hear the details of the Armenian history, which was the cradle of Christianity.
You can reach the island bt public transport with waterbus line 20. It departs every day from San Zaccaria at 15.10. This waterbus stops first at San Servolo and the stop on San Lazzaro is on request only so you have to tell the attendant that you want to go there. The guided tour is every weekday at 15.25 only.
Immerse yourself in the history and charm of this unique island in the Venetian lagoon.
