The church itself was amazing and beautiful, though not real exciting. But, our tour guide (ArtViva's The Original & Best Venice Tour) made it very interesting as she explained more about Venice and how it was built. Booking the tour allowed us "front of the line" passes and made it much more interesting than just walking through. Without the tour... More

Wow!! This has to be one of the most amazing sites I have ever seen. It's an absolute must if you're in Venice. I was stunned when I walked inside and saw all the mosaics. This has only been topped by St Peter's Basilica in Rome but even then that's at a push!

The line gets very long to enter as the day goes on. My husband and I decided to go in the morning and it was only a 25 minute wait. There is no entry fee. There is a dress code: no exposed shoulders or knees. If you do have on shorts and sleeveless shirt they give you a wrap to... More

The Cafe's around the Basilica are expensive but go for the experience, late evening they have live singing which is amazing. Behind the Basilica are lovely shopping in the small streets and reasonable restaurants

This was my third visit to Venice and every time i visit Venice it feels like the first Visit. Byzantine basilica is beautiful. The exterior and the interior is great and intricate, The gold mosaics are so very detailed and just shine. Our Tour Guide explained to us a brief about the history of Basilica and we were amazed. Architecture, history and awesome. A must on your Venice itinerary. Free to go in, 5euro to go upstairs. Only spoiler with camera shutters going off inside the basilica.

Venice is amazing in and of itself. Saint Mark's is a must-see while there. They are often restoring it, so you have to look around the scaffolding, but it's not so noticeable. It's lovely to just walk around the square and be among the architecture and history.

Stayed in Venice. Saint Mark's was very close. Area was lovely. Old buildings and some nice statues. Lots of stores with souvenirs. Loads of restaurants. Tons of birds with kiddos chasing them around. The birds are so used to people, they hardly move when you walk by. They are bothersome when you are eating. Early morning is the best time... More

Staying in San Marco

Neighborhood Profile
San Marco
The most famous sestiere (district) in Venice has one of the world's most famous squares, St. Mark's (Piazza San Marco). Anchored on one end by the basilica, clustered around it are restaurants, museums, shops, orchestras playing in the square, pigeons, the grand pink Doge’s Palace (Palazzo Ducale), the soaring campanile bell tower, an astrological clock tower, plus gorgeous cafes and restaurants like Florian and Quadri. Piazza San Marco is beloved by Venetians themselves. They book a table anytime, which offers a buffer from the fray. This grand outdoor drawing room attracts Venetians for a stroll too, especially late in the afternoon when the hoards of daytrippers thin out. It's simply a grand place to meet.
