Part of the Chorus circuit, this church is fairly nondescript from outside, but don't let that fool you. The ceiling is the most amazing work of art this side of the Sistine Chapel, and there are a lot of other decorative elements in a not too big church. Highly recommended to visit!

Church dedicate to Saint Louis of Toulouse (1274-1297) also known Saint Alvise . I found the church closed so I could admire only the outside whit is shape as a cube and the marble statue of the Saint Alvise over the main portal

A 14th century baroque church, completely square, no aisles. No part of the interior has been left undecorated! Rather like a Victorian sitting-room, with red flock wallpaper. The ceiling was completely painted with trompe a l'oeil in the 17th century and contains messages about the church being a "house of prayer" and to "watch and pray". Indeed, it does some more prayerful than certain other churches. There are more works by famous painters here, particularly by Tiepolo. Nuns could hear mass in a grilled gallery.

I heard a lecture about Venice and the lecturer showed this church. I wrote it down with 5 stars near it, so that whenever I go to Venice I must go there.
I went this summer to Venice. it was a bit far from the center, but all transportation were free as we bought a 3 days card for all transportation. About this church, 5 stars is not enough to describe the ceiling of this church. I have never seen such an amazing kind of painting, and I love art. The ceiling is completely flat and the painter painted a whole complex of columns and arches and a “very far” ceiling, which is all a deception of the eyes. It was worse the effort. It was amazing, different and exciting, worse the effort.

On our last hours of sightseeing we were close enough to come across this little gem.
On paying €3 per person we were offered a info card with history and church layout of the consisting statues, paintings etc.
Very impressed with the ceiling art and altar.
You can light a candle at 50cents a piece as we did.
Practising a faith I was interested and felt I needed the time to reflect before catching a busy flight in this hectic city.

This church is unduly underrated at Tripadvisor so I rate it 5 to help it go up higher. I visited Sant' Alvise as the first church on the Chorus list (i.e. the pass for 15 churches for 12€; otherwise 3€ per church). The church is off the beaten path. In Cannaregio. At first I hesitated to visit it because it was very dark inside. But when I had bought the pass, the lady at the entrance turned on the light. Then I realized that the cause of the darkness was the fact that all the walls and the ceiling were decorated with frescoes and pictures. There was no blank areas like in other Venetian churches. I was impressed the most by the ceiling entirely covered with frescoes done by P.Ricci and A.Torri. There are also three dramatic paintings by Giambattista Tiepolo on the theme of via crucis that impressed me more than his paintings I saw later in San Polo. This is not a big grandiose church, but definitely different than the other ones in Venice and worth visiting. And after it you can walk to the nearby more typical Venetian church Madonna dell'Orto.

Sant Alvise is in the top north corner of Canareggio and can be reached either by vaporetto - there is a stop named after it - or by walking along the unspoilt authentic canals which have wide fondamente and a scattering of sleepy little bars for locals. The exterior of the church is incredibly plain and almost looks like a little castle and, as such, the contrast when you go in is pronounced. The main body is covered by an almost riotous and not not very persuasive trompe l'oeil painted ceiling full of chubby curly columns and patches of a really bright sky blue. It may not be the greatest art, but it is very cheering. Other paintings here range from well choreographed biblical scenes in quite bright colours to almost sinister gloomy episodes of stealing saints bodies. When we arrived we were the only people inside, save the custodian, who turned on the lights for us. It was an enjoyable experience and a real discovery. This was part of the 'Chorus' scheme. Well worth the 12 Euro as this gives free entrance into 15 churches, including the Frari, San Polo and Madonna Del Orto. There is also no time limit to the allowance as far as we are aware.

Except the paintings, there is nothing much here. Also it is quite far from the usual routes. Pretty boring. Recommended only for Gothic fans.

This beautiful little church is in the north east most tip of Cannaregio and one of the Chorus pass group (10 euros gets you entrance to about 15 churches in Venice). Its over 600 years old and still very much used as the local community church. Its bells ring out on the hour and half hour.Like all other churches in Venice it has wonderful art as well as being the first church locally to have a hanging choir used originally from the fifteenth century by nuns from the local convent. Do visit if you can. You can walk there or just step off at the local vaporetti stop.

The outside of this church is very plain, I will not deny that. Sadly we did not have the opportunity to go inside. But I must point out that many of these churches are positively loaded with paintings, statuary and gilded and/or marbled interiors. As it is one of the CHORUS churches and if you choose to do those then you'll have already paid to go inside. If you do have the time and inclination, then I recommend doing the CHORUS tour.
