The area
Neighborhood: San Marco
The most famous sestiere (district) in Venice has one of the world's most famous squares, St. Mark's (Piazza San Marco). Anchored on one end by the basilica, clustered around it are restaurants, museums, shops, orchestras playing in the square, pigeons, the grand pink Doge’s Palace (Palazzo Ducale), the soaring campanile bell tower, an astrological clock tower, plus gorgeous cafes and restaurants like Florian and Quadri. Piazza San Marco is beloved by Venetians themselves. They book a table anytime, which offers a buffer from the fray. This grand outdoor drawing room attracts Venetians for a stroll too, especially late in the afternoon when the hoards of daytrippers thin out. It's simply a grand place to meet.

Adjoining the St. Mark's basilica, the Carta gate was once the main entrance to the Doge's palace.
Doge's palace visitors will likely walk under and exit from this gate. Do not forget to pause and admire the beautiful 570+ years old architecture.

This gate, located between the Basilica and the Doge Palace, was one of two entrances into the Doge Palace. Constructed in gothic styling during the 15th century. Atop the entry portal is the Lion of San Marco and kneeling before it is Doge Foscari.
The door looks out of proportion due to size constraints due to the location of the gate. Atop the door is a statue of Justice holding scales and a sword. Flanking the entryway are four statues of Fortress, Prudence, Hope and Charity.
