Adjoining the St. Mark's basilica, the Carta gate was once the main entrance to the Doge's palace. Doge's palace visitors will likely walk under and exit from this gate. Do not forget to pause and admire the beautiful 570+ years old architecture.

“INTRICATE ENTRYWAY”

This gate, located between the Basilica and the Doge Palace, was one of two entrances into the Doge Palace. Constructed in gothic styling during the 15th century. Atop the entry portal is the Lion of San Marco and kneeling before it is Doge Foscari. The door looks out of proportion due to size constraints due to the location of the gate. Atop the door is a statue of Justice holding scales and a sword. Flanking the entryway are four statues of Fortress, Prudence, Hope and Charity.

This grand outdoor drawing room attracts Venetians for a stroll too, especially late in the afternoon when the hoards of daytrippers thin out. It's simply a grand place to meet.
