About
On October 1, 2016, the Fondaco dei Tedeschi reopened its doors to the public, effectively returning to its former function as a place dedicated to international trade but at the same time not losing sight of the Venetian community that hosts it. The major restorations by Rem Koolhaas have in fact redefined the building, allowing everyone to linger in the center of the court, to admire Venice from a privileged position or to discover the ancient traces of merchants on the different floors. This is combined with the interior design by Jamie Fobert, who reinterprets Venetian colors, shapes and materials by combining the ancient and the modern. Today, Fondaco dei Tedeschi proposes itself as a meeting and exchange point between cultures and people from all over the world. Located in the center of the city, the Fondaco not only maintains close relationships with the most important cultural institutions in the city, but above all offers a real holistic experience that starts from the bout

The area

Address
Neighborhood: San Marco
The most famous sestiere (district) in Venice has one of the world's most famous squares, St. Mark's (Piazza San Marco). Anchored on one end by the basilica, clustered around it are restaurants, museums, shops, orchestras playing in the square, pigeons, the grand pink Doge’s Palace (Palazzo Ducale), the soaring campanile bell tower, an astrological clock tower, plus gorgeous cafes and restaurants like Florian and Quadri. Piazza San Marco is beloved by Venetians themselves. They book a table anytime, which offers a buffer from the fray. This grand outdoor drawing room attracts Venetians for a stroll too, especially late in the afternoon when the hoards of daytrippers thin out. It's simply a grand place to meet.

"We were unable to visit the rooftop terrace...maybe next time!"
The T Fondaco Dei Tedeschi is an unusual store in the center of the city adjacent to the Rialto Bridge. To enter the shopping area is free but to visit the rooftop terrace which gives you remarkable views of the Rialto Bridge and the Grand Canal you have to book a date and time online. There are 15 minute slots to reserve but you need to do this way in advance of your visit. My husband & I were on vacation in Venice to celebrate our #55 anniversary and once we arrived in Venice we attempted to make a reservation, but none were available. We walked up to the 4th floor where the terrace is located but there was such a long, long line and we were still unable to visit. Inside the shopping area are all types of shops and various restaurants.

Fondaco dei Tedeschi Roof Terrace To admire the Venice of the XIII century from a bird's-eye view, visit the free observation deck of the former palazzo, which now houses a luxury department store. A reservation is required 3 weeks before the visit. It was amazing view of Venice! And then a pleasant walk through the luxury shopping gallery and a pleasant shopping experience.

Fantastic 360 degree panoramic views from the Terrace but advance booking online essential. It is free.
The Fondaco dei Tedeschi is a four storey luxury department store occupied by DFS that fronts the Grand Canal less than 50 metres from the Rialto Bridge. We had read about gaining access to the terrace on the top floor for great views of the Grand Canal and Venice in general but made the mistake of not booking in advance online. We quickly rectified this and got a spot two days later. There are both escalators and elevators up to the terrace. They only allow a certain number of visitors (there appeared to be around 20 in our group) in 15 minute intervals. You get 15 minutes on the terrace to enjoy the fantastic panoramas. It is free and well worth the effort given the 360 degree views. Highly recommended.

We visited the department store and enjoyed the lunchtime light show from the café. We also booked a time slot for the Terrace to view the Rialto Bridge and city rooftops. Highly recommended but you may need to book a day or more in advance as spaces are limited to prevent crowding.

Fondaco dei Tedeschi is a 3 story building turned into a luxury mall. Apart from all the shopping extravaganza distributed over the three floors, two things are worth checking out:
- the building interior, left completely open (the shops are all around the walls, the central part is empty and nicely lit)
- the awesome terrace, one of the top spots to have a 360 degree rooftop view of Venice. Book your visit online, show up at the right time and you will skip the (long) line!
A maximum of 40 people are allowed on the terrace at a given time, maybe fewer in covid times :)
(Free bonus info: another cool view of Venice from high up is from the San Giorgio bell tower)

Very classy store over multiple floors with atrium. Lower ground has an equally classy bar. Most tourists go for the viewing platform looking out over the canal and rooftops of Venice. Although other towers offer better higher views this has a different perspective and impresses just the same. Free but you need to book a slot on their website or use the QR code displayed near the entrance. Helpful friendly staff explained

This is a department store with top end stuff, however... saw people on the top of this building from the Rialto Bridge and wondered how they were there.
This is fab, up the escalator or lift to the top floor (past all designer goods 😱), and reserve the next available 15minute slot to go outside! The view....just WOW! This is so worth it, and the cost - nil 👌 It's a must!

The shop wasn't my personal cup of tea- there was little of interest for me (though the food on the ground floor looked good and the building is impressive) and the staff were a bit overbearing.

What I really recommend you go for is the views from the terrace at the top- you have to book a timeslot but it is completely free. You get to see Venice from a completely different angle are you are right by the Rialto bridge- it is just amazing and one of the top things I'd suggest a visitor tries.

The shopping centre looks really nice, and if you're interested in high-end products, then that's the perfect place for you.

We, however, went there mainly for the roof terrace, which was recommended to us by a friend. You better book a slot online in advance, and once you're there you're granted 15 minutes on top. These 15 minutes are, however, really fantastic! The view is amazing and perfect for photos!

The staff was incredibly friendly and professional.

Stop by if you have some time, otherwise don't sweat over it.
You have to sign up online for an appointment and get there on time. You go up the velvet escalator and wait for about 5-10 minutes in a group to get to the rooftop.
Once you get there, you get an okay view Rialto bridge and the whole city. Since it's built more in the center, you can see straight down, so the photos might come out weird if you don't angle them correctly. You get 10-15 minutes to admire the view, then get down via stairs.
Mall looks nice, but way too expensive.

It is worthwhile to make advance online reservations for their 15 minute rooftop terrace views. I believe the availability opens up about a month before your scheduled date of visit, so check often. They mention that you may make reservations in person, but it was not the case we visited in July. They only allow a certain amount of people up on the terrace at any given time.
To enter the place, you need to get to the front entrance (near the right of Rialto Bridge)and detour over to the end of the street for the actual entrance used. From their, you can use the elevator to access over to the terrace. The views from here are nice of the Grand Canal past Rialto Bridge and before Rialto Bridge, along with the rooftops of the San Marco Basilica and Campanile in the background on a clear day.
No where else in Venice can you get such nice rooftop views of these famous landmarks. Well worth the visit here.

I felt sad for Venice. This is a beautiful building in a very historic area turned into a department store. There are very few Italians there shopping. I felt I was in a shopping mall in Hong Kong which in Hong Kong is very nice but not in Venice. The views from the roof may be good but there are plenty of campanile to climb up with as good or better views and you don’t have to be bombarded by designer labels to enjoy it.
