The area
Neighborhood: San Marco
The most famous sestiere (district) in Venice has one of the world's most famous squares, St. Mark's (Piazza San Marco). Anchored on one end by the basilica, clustered around it are restaurants, museums, shops, orchestras playing in the square, pigeons, the grand pink Doge’s Palace (Palazzo Ducale), the soaring campanile bell tower, an astrological clock tower, plus gorgeous cafes and restaurants like Florian and Quadri. Piazza San Marco is beloved by Venetians themselves. They book a table anytime, which offers a buffer from the fray. This grand outdoor drawing room attracts Venetians for a stroll too, especially late in the afternoon when the hoards of daytrippers thin out. It's simply a grand place to meet.

On a rainy Tuesday, of all days, we planned to see some of the modern art in Venice.
We moved in for the Guggenheim museum but stood in front of a closed door.
Same for Palazzo Grassi, also closed.
Fortunately, at this last place we almost immediately walked into the Chiesa de San Samuele, which was open and had been turned into a sponsored exhibition space.
This church was very tastefully decorated and very well maintained with some interesting modern works.
We can only say, if you are at the Palazzo Grassi, be sure to visit here. Thanks to the Canadian sponsors.

This little church next to Palazzo Grassi is located by vaporetto stop San Samuele along the Grand Canal. I went to Palazzo Grassi to see Damien Hirst's Treasures from the Wreck of the Unbelievable, and spotted this church where there was an exhibition going on (Evan Penny: Ask Your Body, part of the 2017 Venice Biennale). The exhibition featured sculptures by this Canadian artist and was very good. I previously did not know about his works and was very impressed. If you go to Palazzo Grassi, check this church out to see if there is any exhibition inside.
(I note from some review on the internet that this church is not open unless there is an i.)

Chiesa di San Samuele :- Samuel is another of the Old Testament prophets which Venice, unique among cities in Italy, have venerated as saints due, it is said, to its strong ties with Byzantium and the Orthodox church. The original church was built in 1000 by the Boldù and Soranzo families and shared its dedication with the apostle Matthew. First documented in 1090, and repaired after fires in 1105 and 1170. The current building dating from a rebuilding of 1685. The façade and the statue of the Virgin over the door date from this rebuilding. In 1952 the façade was rebuilt and the original, but much changed, porch was restored. At this time the loggia on the upper storey was also opened up.

A common church, not one of the most beautiful in Venice. The bell tower has a roof similar to Campanile di San Marco but is far less impressive.
