Castello is the largest of the six sestieri (districts), and the only one not facing onto the Grand Canal. More than half of Castello is situated within Arsenale, the naval base, which occupies over one-fifth the area of Venice. This gentrified maritime neighborhood feels busy but casual. Castello’s side streets are laid back, with small boats lining canals criss-crossed by laundry. Semiannual exhibitions add a strong artsy current to the Arsenale area. Via Garibaldi in Castello, with its shops and bars, has one of Venice's rare straight and wide boulevards. When a large ship turns around the Lido to enter the Giudecca Canal, the startling sight creates an illusion that it will run aground right on Via Garibaldi! Families treasure Giardini near the island's tip, green with rare trees and grass, and Riva degli Schiavoni is a popular spot for Venetians to take a stroll to watch the sunset.

In giro per una ennesima visita alla chiesa di San Giovanni in Bragora , notiamo nel Campo della Bragora (anche della Bandiera o Moro ) questo bel palazzo quattrocentesco che sicuramente impreziosisce questo piccolo campo. Molto bella la sua facciata con le classiche finestre in stile gotico ad ogiva e , soprattutto la pentafora con pilastri in marmo rosa di Verona , impreziosita da inserti marmorei a cerchio e rilievi scultorei con altorilievi bizantini. Una policromia vivace è derivata dalla alternanza di colonne a Rosso di Verona e marmo bianco.Molto interessante la sua storia che , malgrado le connotazioni architettoniche tipiche del '400 , si può fare risalire certamente al secolo precedente ; l'ambiente di maggior fascino è di certo il fastoso salone ricco di mobili antichi, dipinti del 1700, pregiati tappeti, fastosi lampadari di Murano, infine elaborati stucchi -tipici del secolo dei lumi - sulle pareti ed il soffitto; ad esso si accede attraverso una rampa di scale d'epoca. Interessante nella visita, ripercorrere i passaggi di proprietà che ha visto il palazzo prima dei Gritti,nobile famiglia dogale (siamo oltre la metà del Cinquecento), trasferito per matrimonio quale bene dotale ai Morosini , altra nobile e celeberrima famiglia veneziana , quindi passata ai Badoer sempre per matrimonio ed infine associata anche ai Partecipazio . Oggi fastoso hotel , in cui ho avuto la ventura di villeggiare tempo fa e , dove sono ritornato con piacere poichè il salone al piano nobile è oggi visitabile , ricordando anche che l'edificio è menzionato anche in un romanzo thriller ("Il segreto dei Medici" di M. White) ma ancor prima venne ritratto dal famoso incisore Jacopo de' Barbari nella sua veduta di Campo di Bragora .

L’elegante costruzione di proprietà del Doge Andrea Gritti ( 1455-1538 ) passa nel 1591 alla famiglia Morosini per il matrimonio tra Lucrezia Gritti e Tommaso Morosini. In seguito ad un altro matrimonio tra Elisabetta Morosini e Sebastiano Badoer passa a quest’ultima famiglia.
La vicina Chiesa San Giovanni in Bragora completa la tipica atmosfera veneziana di questo piccolo Campo .

Не стоит путать это несколько обветшавшее здание, возникшее XIV веке в сердце Кастелло, с известным многим пятизвездочным отелем, разместившимся в неоготическом палаццо XIX в. Пизани Гритти на Гран Канале. Интересны остатки средневековых фресок, различимые на южном и восточном фасадах палаццо.
