The Treviso Cathedral, dedicated to St. Peter, is an imposing building located in the Duomo Square of the said city. Its architectural style is neoclassical, albeit the temple which was originally on the same site was in romanesque style. The construction of the latter was carried out in the eleventh and twelfth centuries. The present edifice dates back to the second half of the eighteenth century, being the crypt however the only part thereof remaining from the previous edifice.
The front façade of the church is a majestic appearance of beautiful aesthetics. Its most outstanding elements are a large staircase and the tall six trick cone shaped columns with their ionic capitals. It's really a fantastic view which reveals much elegance. The bell tower is unfinished, but nice anyway.
It's a three-nave church, the side aisles being narrower than the central nave. The interior is impressing on account of its grandiosity. On the ceiling one can observe seven hemispherical domes, five of them being over the central nave. The chancel is rich in marble statuary and wall painting, all of them of a great value, and giving the presbytery a splendour in line with the rest of the temple. The high altar is not profusely ornamented but is very nice. The whole is in fact alluring.
The cathedral houses many works of art, both in sculptural and pictorial compositions. Among them, the most important one is a painting by Tiziano depicting the Annunciation in which the representation of the angel is really original and precious. In the chapel where that masterpiece is located one can observe some splendid frescoes from the sixteenth century by the great Italian painter Giovanni Antonio Pordenone, such as those representing the Adoration of the Magi, the Dream of August, St. Peter and St. Paul, and St. Liberale.
The crypt under the cathedral is also of an utmost interest. In it one can admire beautiful artworks in both the painting and sculpture domains. On several walls and arches there are some remains of marvellous frescoes. Besides, some column capitals representing foliage motifs are really fantastic. The whole, with its diaphragmatic arches and multiple columns is spectacular. In it the tombs of some city bishops and the Ark of St. Liberale in the apse are indeed fascinating.
The cathedral concerned must therefore be visited while in Treviso. Though one is just wishing to watch the Tiziano's painting, once inside he will certainly become spellbound.

The neoclassical exterior with its Palladian portico belies the interior. Inside the church are a series of domes and several very interesting pieces. The highlights for us were the Titian Annunciation (a subject that is a personal favorite) and, most especially the 12th century fresco, in superb condition, of the martyrdom of St.Thomas Becket. The frescoes of Il Pordenone would be worth the visit, as are the impressionistic Stations of the Cross done in 1947 by Alessandro Pomi. The 1425 St. Sebastian by Gentile da Fabriano is stunning in its simplicity. A fine example of the International Gothic style. A bit of a hodgepodge in terms of style but there are few places in the world where one can see a 12th century fresco in such excellent condition.

It can be reached from Piazza dei Signori. It is a mix of styles given that the first construction dates back to the 6th century and the last renovation in the 19th century. the facade is characterized by a large staircase and six Ionic columns, particularly the seven large domes.

This is a huge building topped by seven domes with an enormous facade in neoclassical style. Not less than seven big columns support the triangular frieze. The cathedral was built in 1768 after an older structure was demolished. The facade was added in 1836, a time when the Roman Catholic church was well established. Quite noticeable, the architecture underscores the power of the church.
The interior is spacious and rather sober, but light. There are some remarkable pieces of art among them a Titian from around 1520, the 'Malchiostro Annunciation'. Personally I liked a late 15th century sculpture by Andrea Bregno (predecessor of Michelangelo) depicting a visit to Mary. A wonderful masterpiece.

Many people who visit northern Italy visit Venice, but they should also visit Treviso! A good place to start is Treviso Cathedral, built in the neoclassical style with its imposing row of columns at the main door. Inside it is quite light with many interesting features to see. Everybody goes to visit "The Annunciation" by Titian, (in a chapel next to the sanctuary) but we should also remember that one of its famous sons is Joseph Sarto - Pope Saint Pius X. He was Cathedral Canon, Diocesan Chancellor and Spiritual Director of the seminary from 1875 to 1884, before being appointed Bishop of Mantua. To the right of the sanctuary is the altar dedicated to Saint Pius X, with a bronze statue sculpted by Toni Benetton in 1954 (the year of his beatification). Inside the sanctuary are two paintings depicting him as pope as well as a carved inscription above the Canons seat that he occupied in the cathedral as Canon. The crypt is also very interesting, housing the tombs of the Treviso bishops. Around the back is the Diocesan Museum – well worth a visit (but only open a few days a week) and also a recently discovered Roman pavement, possible from some ancient Roman baths.

After seeing the Church of Saint Nicolo I walked to see the cathedral. The last Mass for the day had finished, but there was still one of the priests in a confessional available for confessions. Photos are permitted, as long as no flash is used. Until I saw the title of the church here, I had no realized it was the Cathedral of Saint Peter the Apostle. The church is very clean, and will take a couple of hours to see. There was a crypt, but it was closed, so I wasn't able to see that part of the facility. Next time!

The history of this church goes back to Roman times, but the the Cathedral as it is today was built in the 16th century. The Cathedral is dedicated to St. Peter. Interesting are the several domes of the church. Inside, impressive religious art can be admired. Don't skip the Cathedral when visiting Treviso. You can recognize the building by the classic front with the massive pillars. See the pictures I have added to this review.

Worth a look even if it's just to go into the crypt, which apart from being an interesting place to visit, it's a calming and very atmospheric area to walk round.

Part of my unplanned private tour of Treviso, the cathedral is well worth a visit. What you see today is a 19th century facade to the cathedral which has been rebuilt a number of times and can be traced back to the 6th century. Whilst not as awe inspiring as some of the churches in nearby Venice it does have a particularly interesting crypt and work by Titian.
