Padua is a proud old city with a very rich cultural heritage. Much of this is thanks to the city's university, which is considered the second oldest in Europe and where, among others, Galileo Galilei has taught. Rich families and merchants have historically contributed to many striking buildings and there are lots of things to experience by wandering around the old town. In my opinion, however, it is a pity that the city does not get the attention it deserves because of its position near Venice. Considering all the amazing churches (Basilica di Sant Antonio, Duomo, Basilica di Santa Giustina among many others), beautiful squares (Piazza delle Erbe, Piazza della Frutta, Piazza dei Signori, Prato della Valle), the many excellent museums (The Scrovegni Chapel, The Eremitani museums for example), the university buildning (Palazzo Bo) and the famous Café Pedrocchi, anyone understands that this is something really special. The life that goes on is a joy to see and the city also has a student character that is clearly evident. Absolutely do not miss all this.

Pavia has a beautiful historic center where you can visit several palaces, squares, shops, bars and restaurants. Very pleasant to take an interesting walk.

We visited in November and it was probably not the best time to truly appreciate the beauty of the architecture. Certainly well worth visiting.

Thoroughly enjoyed walking around this town and taking in the sights. Be sure to stop at Cafè Pedrocchi and have a Compari Spritz before dinner. It is a landmark café founded in the 18th century.

I spent 5 days in Padua in the historic center near the Palazzo della Regione and the university, and it was terrific - I'll be sorry to leave. There are some wonderful sites, great places to eat, and generally safe streets on which to take an evening stroll (watch out for cyclists). Being near the university adds a vibrancy to the atmosphere and keeps prices down in the historical center, since it's not just tourists who visit here. There is art, history, science, and energy here - I believe it's an undiscovered gem that people only think of as a cheaper place to stay when visiting Venice. It's MUCH nicer and more interesting than Venice!

We were coming back from our Canary vacation flying to Pisa. On our way back home, there were two reasons to visit Padova.
The main was a pilgrimage to St. Anthony Basilica in whose Church in our hometown my wife and I were married and both our children baptized.
The second was that lodging here is much more affordable than in nearby Venice.
Being here for a day we were delighted with the old town Padova. Terrific city center with several large and beautiful Piazzas, magnificent churches and abundance of bars and restaurants in the open.

We had an enjoyable time exploring the city centre. To make the most of it, it is best to have a guide of some form as there is much to see. Don't miss, for example, the courtyards of the university or the equestrian statue by Donatella.

Sadly, apart from St Anthony's Basilica, the churches were closed. I don't know whether that was the time of day or the day of the week.

Busy and friendly, with lots of shops and cafes, you just need to watch out for the cyclists who are everywhere.

Padua is an easy and cheap day trip from Venice in the train and I was really surprised by how few tourists were around. It is a beautiful and compact city full of historic squares and buildings, and without the cruise ship masses that spoil Venice. Being more authentically Italian the atmosphere is great and even in the main squares the cafes were reasonably priced. The markets were an added bonus.
