This guided tour takes you to a massive waterfall, but one that has a history and a purpose behind it.
The man made retaining walls (at thirty-eight metres, the first was breached so a second was constructed further along), stop rocks and sediment, allowing the water to cascade in spectacular torrents, over the sides. The ravine rockwalls beyond the waterfalls are alive with plants, and the water seeping through the walls makes for a surreal experience.
The final part of the tour takes you to a platform below the waterfall. An incredible view of thousands of litres of water, spilling violently over the edge, right in front of you.
Highly recommend Simone, our tour guide, who did a fantastic job of taking us through, while speaking in both his native Italian and in English, just for the benefit of my English speaking husband.
One tip.. make sure you prebook, online. There may be a waiting period.
We did this in late Spring, after heavy rains in the weeks before. This made for a spectacular experience.

The spectacular view of this canyon is achieved on the same stairs and path originally traced in 1535 to build this extreme engineering work, designed to reduce the speed of water, that could have caused debris floods in the town of Trento during heavy rains. Absolutely astonishing for its age. Breathtaking view of the waterfalls. 45 min guided tour. You need to reserve your entrance.

The gorge near Ponte Alto has attracted inhabitants and tourists from the city of Trento since the 1800s. The so-called "Orrido" is a deep canyon carved by the river Fersina over thousands of years
Here, in the 1500s some of the most ancient hydraulica works in the world were built, in order to protect the city from floods. Two weirs give rise to magnificient 40m high water falls that flow through red rocks, thus creating spectacular light effects.
For security reason were closed from 1990s and now opened again

Need to pre book online. Guide explained everything in Italian only we had to ask if he could do English but we were told as it was a large group that would not be possible, he did give a brief summary in English at the end.

This place is fantastic, the guide speaks multiply languages and takes time while you take in the scenery (and take pictures)

Any string of words would be useless.
Just say: CRAZY. Stop.
Seeing is believing. I also avoid uploading too many photos, as they don't convey the idea of beauty at all... and I don't want to reveal even the last step... breathtaking!!!!!

I recommend visiting on a beautiful winter/spring day to be able to appreciate it at its best, that is, with water... unfortunately in summer it is easy to find it dried up...

Beautiful place, the low cost of the visit is worth it all, Tobia our guide is an exceptional guy, very knowledgeable, enthusiastic and friendly.
Appreciated the fact of being able to sit at the restaurant tables and eat our sandwich, we took a drink because it was correct to do so, parking signs to be reviewed, at the pedestrian traffic light near the entrance in front of the dumpling shop you have to go up and park there, but it's not immediately clear.
The visit was very beautiful, the engineering to save Trento was crazy. Simple path with stairs

We purchased the ticket for the ravine together with that for the Ciucioi Gardens (spectacular and recommended).
The ravine is wonderful with its history and the relaxation that the water gives. The waterfall can be reached by going down 200 steps for a height difference of one thousand metres.
If you purchase both tickets, pay attention to the times, the two attractions are located in 2 different municipalities and if there is traffic or parking difficulties, 15 minutes becomes a misery to get around.
