We took the train to Marling, then along the main road to the Oberwirt, then steeply up the mountain. Once at the top, there was a wonderful view over the Merano region.
The path was very easy to walk, with lots of small restaurants where you can eat or drink something. The days they are closed vary, so there is always something open ☺️🍷🍇. We then hiked to Töll, which was very comfortable and always had a great view. Lots of benches where you can stop and enjoy the view again.
The only negative point is that in Töll there is only an hourly connection.

These are paths alongside irrigation channels, some hundreds of years old. Most are accessible by bus [choose to walk downhill!] and there is an excellent little booklet from the Tourist Office for 3 euros with maps and info - don't be put off by them being only available in German or Italian - the key info is clear - length, time, bus link, refreshment places en route etc and, of course a useful map.

We did the Maiser Waalweg route from Merano to Saltusio, about 10km in length. Much of the walk is under the cover of trees, which at the height of summer provides a welcome relief from the heat of the sun. After about 7km from Merano look out for a small water wheel, periodically this sounds a cow bell to indicate that the water is flowing and that no one has diverted the flow.

This covers a set of walks that go by different names. But it's an easy and rewarding walk that starts in the city center. You can walk anywhere from 20 minutes to probably 4 hours. Many pleasant stops along the way. If starting in the city, look for the Tappeeiner Weg.

Relaxing and not very heavy hiking/walking. Check out the location of the waalweg before start. Some of the don't get a lot of sun during the afternoon.

As a visitor to Merano, even a short walk along this trail affords an excellent overview of the valley and surrounding mountains plus the terraced hillsides of fruit trees. This trail has good walking surface, so not too arduous. And the little stream alongside makes for a pleasant watery soundtrack too. Very enjoyable.
